The “Yellow Submarine” is not just a famous song in Pattaya. It is a real submarine tourist attraction that’s truly one of the most unique of all attractions in Pattaya. The “Yellow Submarine” or the Vimantaitalay is the first submarine amusement ride in Pattaya, fast gaining popularity with the locals as well as foreign tourists worldwide.
The Vimantaitalay Submarine Tour started in 2004 when the submarine was acquired by Thailand. It was originally from Belgium where it was built in 2001, registered and named PIROM by the owners. It then became a property of Israel, before it finally found a home in Thailand. It was tested for safety before it was launched, four months after its acquisition in Pattaya. The Germanische Lloyd’s, one of the best submarine inspection companies in the world, gave it a go-signal and soon, tourists from all over the world were booking for a chance to be in the submarine and enjoy Pattaya’s underwater sceneries.
The submarine opens the opportunity for people to “dive” underwater without getting wet, to observe marine life from the other side of a clear window. Suddenly, you don’t have to be a diver and go to the deepest levels of the sea to see rare species of fish and underwater creatures in Pattaya. All you have to do is sit tight to see beautiful corals and reefs, fishes, sea turtles, and all other creatures of sea often only seen in its depths. Your feet won’t even get wet! And all that is possible because of this Submarine.
The Submarine can travel 100 meters under the sea at a maximum speed of 7 knots. It measures 22.2-meter long, with a 7.2-meter height. It is run and powered by electro-hydraulics system, and the life support time is 72 hours. It can hold up to 48 people with two parallel benches inside in front of the observation windows.
When you book a trip, expect to be under the water for 45 minutes. The trip starts at South Pattaya Pier, where riders will be taken via a ferryboat to the Barge Ship at Koh Sak. From the Barge Ship, passengers will be transferred to the Submarine. The transfers and sea journey will all roughly take about 30-40 minutes.
Once you are inside the submarine and it submerges, you will then have about 45 minutes of underwater sight-seeing through the submarine’s clear window. This is the perfect time to feast on the wonders of the sea and take advantage of every second you’re there. When the 45 minutes are up, passengers will be transported back to the Pier the same way. The whole trip lasts approximately over an hour to 2 or 3 hours maximum.
But even though it’s just a couple of hours or so, the Vimantaitalay Submarine Tour promises to be the most memorable tour of all. The chance to see and observe underwater life within the comfortable confines of the Submarine is truly wonderful, you might just find yourself agreeing with the Beatles and live in the Yellow Submarine.
