The Oasis Seaworld, located in Sukhumvit Road just 25 kilometers from central Pattaya, is one of the most popular attractions in the city. The Oasis Seaworld is an aqua park maintained privately but regulated closely by the Thailand government. It houses several dolphins, some species of which are considered endangered in Thailand. It hosts dolphin shows daily and offers the one-of-a-kind experience of swimming with the dolphins.
It all started in 1991 when a group of fishermen accidentally caught some dolphins. Because the mammals were hurt, they were not released into the sea immediately, but were cared for and nursed back to health by what is now known as the Oasis Seaworld. Today, aside from nurturing the dolphins, the park also breeds them. The highly-trainable animals were trained and taught tricks that they show off daily for the visitors’ entertainment. But what brings loads of tourists into the park everyday is the “swim with the dolphins” experience.
The “swim with the dolphins” attraction attracts foreign and local tourists both for the chance to see, touch and pet these intelligent mammals. An experience that marine-life lovers seek from every sea around the world but rarely find. In Thailand, you only need to travel to Pattaya to have a close encounter with these wonderful animals. But even though it’s just a few hours away from Pattaya and even from Bangkok, an advance booking of three days is required to experience this amusement.
It is easy to go to Oasis Seaworld. You can either organize it yourself or book it through the many tour companies offering the trip. If you decide to go by yourself, you can take a taxi or rent out a Songthaew. It is unlikely that the driver doesn’t know how to get there but if that happens to be the case, you can direct him to turn right on the first corner after the Highway Number 3. It is easy to make out the road signs from there and you’ll find many direction signs of the park in the road.
Don’t be surprised if you see cloudy water in the pool instead of bright aqua once you get there. The water is structured to imitate as closely as possible the natural habitat of the dolphins. In fact, every hour, a special kind of equipment is used to make sure that the temperature, substances and elements in the water are ideal for the dolphins.
You will also be required to shower and change into swimming gear before you can go swim with the animals. This is to make sure that they don’t pick up bacteria and viruses that might be harmful to them. Furthermore, at the end of the day, the dolphins are checked for injuries and washed with solutions that are supposed to kill any lingering bacteria on their bodies. These are how dolphins are taken care of inside the park. They are not just there on their own after they have entertained people, but they are pampered and babied to make sure they’re always in the best of their health.
So if you’re ever in Thailand, or you’re already in Pattaya, a visit to the Oasis Seaworld is definitely a must. After all, swimming with the dolphins is really a special kind of experience.
