Aside from the pools in hotels and resorts, swimming in Jakarta is possible by going to water theme parks, of which there are a number. The most popular water theme park in Jakarta is the Atlantis Water Adventure in Ancol Dreamland.
Atlantis Water Adventure offers different types of swimming pools: wave pool, rainbow balls pool, rainbow pool, spiral pool, stream pool, and river rapids pool. The wave pool is 2 meters deep and, as the name implies, has artificial waves that mimic the gentle waves of the sea. The rainbow balls pool has slides designed in the shape of heron tails. The rainbow pool is a children’s pool. It has water guns and water sprayers for the kids to play with. The spiral pool has a spiral trench slide that drops into the water. The stream pool is designed to look like a small flowing canal. It is 1.2 meters deep, 8 meters wide, and 350 meters long. Finally, the river rapids pool has a 14-meter high slide.
Another water park that people go to for swimming in Jakarta is Waterbom. The place has attracted tourists over the years because of the good quality of its facilities. Waterbom in Jakarta was opened in 2007. It has different kinds of waterslides, the most of popular of which is the Hairpin, a giant waterslide with a steep slope and sharp turns. The water used in Waterbom goes through a thorough purification process so that there is no need to use chlorine. As a result, the water is harmless both to the human body and to the environment.
The beach is also one place where you can go swimming in Jakarta. There are two beaches found in Ancol Dreamland – Carnival Beach and Festival Beach. However, some people say that the water in these areas is not clean enough for swimming, although the beaches are a good place to relax. If you want real swimming on the beach, you should head out to Thousand Islands, a group of islands found north of Jakarta. There are some islands that have been developed especially for tourism purposes. These are Ayer, Bidadari, and Kotok islands.
Ayer is a resort island that is 6.5 hectares big. It is about 25 minutes away from Marina Ancol. Ethnic looking “floating” cottages serve as accommodations. There are 41 cottages in all. The island also has a restaurant, a bar, a small disco, and a karaoke.
Bidadari Island is 20 minutes away from Ancol Marina. It is surrounded by white sand beaches that are perfect for swimming. On the island, you will find an old fort which the Dutch used to defend the Indonesian territory during colonial times. Like Bidadari Island, Kotok Island is embraced by white sand beaches. Aside from this, it has breathtaking underwater scenes that make the area perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. The Bondol eagle habitat on the Kotok Island is a protected site.
You have plenty of choices if you want to go swimming in Jakarta. You can go to the water parks or the beach – or you can have a taste of both.
