Bandung is famous for being a shopping paradise of Indonesia. Many residents of Jakarta flock to Bandung during the weekend for some retail therapy. For most part, there are tons of factory outlets here that sell genuine products, rejects and fake items. No matter what your budget is, shopping in Bandung can surely accommodate anyone.
There are both shopping districts and shopping malls in Bandung that are popular among shopaholics. Being colonized by the Dutch in the past, the town also has a handful of old yet appealing Dutch colonial houses that have been converted into factory outlets. Although there are some designer labels, you will certainly struggle to find luxury brands as most high-end stores are factory outlets while the rest remain bargains. Still, Bandung certainly provides something for everybody with the many places you can go to for shopping.
Dago located in the downtown area is where all the factory outlets are located. Some retail shops include Hugo Boss, Polo Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith and Ed Hardy. The entire strip has about 20 outlets so be prepared to do heavy damage to your budget as you’ll be spending a lot of cash here. If you run out of money, credit cards are accepted here as well.
Another area famous for shopping is the Setuabudi area with a number of branded factory outlet stores. Make sure not to miss going into Ruman Mode as they carry many international brands with some of them being rejects. The district’s open concept area makes it a pleasing place to do shopping in. Some shops also sell LV, Gucci and Burberry bags at reasonable prices.
For a more relaxed approach in shopping, the Paris Van Java Mall is a must-visit mall not only for its wide range of items but also for its unique concept. Stores are lined up similar to a boutique open concept mall that lets the sunlight in, giving you a feeling that you’re outdoors even though you’re not. The best thing about the Paris Van Java Mall is its outside terrace where all the famous coffee shops are located along the stretch. After a tiring day of shopping, it will be easy to find a cozy place to just rest in as you see how the locals relax towards the end of the day as well.
Another famous shopping area is Cihampelas, which is another long stretch of factory outlets. Items found here are a lot cheaper but of low quality. Bargaining is expected in almost all the stores and it is also a good place to eat cheap and yummy snacks. One noticeable feature is that most of the shops are designed with gigantic superheroes on their signboards. It then makes the entire strip come to life with massive statues of Superman, Spiderman and Batman hanging around. Items sold along the strip are mostly local t-shirts and jeans. Its newest addition is the Cihampelas Walk, which is a new shopping mall with stores that sell branded clothes.
The central Bandung area is generally dominated by large-scale shopping districts and malls with plenty of choices. Shopping in Bandung is probably the city’s main draw. Take advantage of endless shopping opportunities during your stay in Bandung and you will get to buy one-of-a-kind finds at unbelievable prices.
