It is important for you to know what to wear in Taipei before you go on your trip to Taiwan’s capital. People in Taipei are quite fashion conscious. They are always dressed in chic clothes and always look fashionably dressed no matter what the weather is. It is quite common to see people all dressed up walking along the streets, riding the MRT trains, and even buying supplies at a local grocery store. This does not mean that you should keep up with stylish apparel when you visit Taipei. It is good, however, to have an idea of how the locals look like so you will know what to wear in Taipei and you will not stand out with “tourist” written all over your attire.
Fashion in this city is not very similar to that in the Western countries. Instead, it is influenced by both Japanese and Chinese cultures, although it leans more heavily on the Japanese influence. The clothes are very modern and a lot more liberal compared to other Asian countries. Wearing shorts, tank tops, and mini skirts is acceptable.
The summer months begin in June and extend until August. During these months, it is best to wear clothes with thin, breathable fabric. Thus, it will be comfortable to wear clothes made of linen or cotton on hot summer months. This is also the season for wearing sleeveless blouses, shorts, hip sunglasses, and sexy flip-flops. During the winter months, the temperatures do get cold but they are generally tolerable. People do not wear thick jackets, but they do don jackets that are thick enough to keep the cold away. Women can still wear mini skirts even in the cold weather, like some locals do, but they should use the thicker kind of hose to protect them from the cold. The common attire for the winter months includes long sleeved shirts or blouses, long pants, and a hat. Because the cold temperature is tolerable, wearing gloves is not necessary, and is in fact not practiced by the locals.
Here is a word of caution about choosing what to wear in Taipei. Avoid dressing up too much so as not to attract muggers if you are heading out to the less crowded places in the city, or pickpockets if you are going to the crowded areas like the night markets. Although Taipei is generally a safe place, crimes do happen, and tourists wearing chic attire can easily catch the attention of muggers.
If you are still unsure of what to wear, just bring a few clothes along and shop for clothes as soon as you arrive in the city. This way, you can be sure that you are wearing locally acceptable fashion. On a side note, however, you must remember that you do not really have to wear exactly what the locals are wearing. You can visit Taipei and keep your own fashion style.
People in the city are used to seeing foreigners around, and they won’t really pay much attention to your attire. Wearing clothes acceptable to the locals is just a way of showing respect to the residents of the city you are in. However, the most important consideration when choosing what to wear in Taipei is that you feel comfortable in your clothes.
