Located at Salcete Taluka, close to Benaulim, Fatrade and Cavelossim Beaches, Varca Beach is one of the longest Goa beaches, not to mention the quietest among the beaches in Salcete Taluka. The beach is also cleaner than most beaches, making it an ideal destination for people desiring ‘alone time’. Spending time all by yourself while feeling the cool air and relaxing under a beach shack is somewhat therapeutic, especially when you’re burned out from work or stressed out with your hectic daily life.
Often pertaining to two beaches – Fatrade and Varca – the beach stretches across 10 kilometers of clean white sand and clear azure water. The Fatrade beach, located a stone’s throw away from Varca, is considered as perhaps the most secluded place in Goa.
While Varca Beach may not be the leading beach destination in India, the tranquility of this place compensates for that, with its lush greenery and bountiful nature. The near-unspoiled beach is a major puller of vacationers who want a quieter, greener and cleaner environment. Once a traditional fishing village, the beachside is lined with coconut palms and dotted with palm-thatched beach houses and shacks while certain places of the coastline are adorned with black lava rocks.
A popular beach activity here is dolphin spotting. For this special delight, you can book a boat and do boat tripping into the sea to witness playing dolphins and if you are lucky, you may even touch them right up close. Another popular activity is trying different types of water sports. In Varca, a few water sports operators offer equipment for rent. You may indulge yourself in adventurous water activities like speedboat rides, jet ski, windsurfing, banana ride, bump rides, water skiing and parasailing. You may visit Leela Palace Hotel in Mobor-Cavelossim Beach as they offer water sport set-ups.
Unlike other beaches in the north, swimming in Varca is generally safe but never go any deeper than your waist unless you are a good swimmer. If you prefer warming up your body, biking is a good option for you. Rent a bike and drive along the firm sand. When it comes too nightlife, it is best to visit the adjacent Mobor-Cavelossim beach as several resorts offer discotheque, entertainment lounge and casino there.
In terms of food, several food joints and restaurants are available across Varca that serve good food, at good price and service. Several beach shacks can be found that serve delicious Goan dishes and seafood.
Beachside accommodation varies from budget, mid-range and fine hotels. For economy and budget class hotels, there are plenty to choose from depending on your budget and needs. Some of the finest hotel resorts in Varca include Colonial Jose Menino Resort, Club Mahindra Varca Beach Resort, Mar Azul Beach Villas, Radisson White Sands Resort, Varca Palm Beach Resort and Ramada Caravela Beach Resort.
Varca Beach is 40 kilometers from Dabolim Airport. You may hire pre-paid cabs to reach or buses leaving from Margao Bus Stand to Varca. Margao Station is the closest rail station (18 kilometers) from Varca. For local transport, you can use motorbikes or bicycles, which are available for hire.
