Taichung City Cultural Center, now known as Wenying Hall, is the first private cultural center in Central Taiwan. Donated by the Wen Ying Foundation, it has hosted various cultural and artistic events for the past two decades. Located in Shuangshih Road, the hall was constructed in October 1976. It was originally a municipal cultural center dedicated to the collection of historical and cultural relics and promotion of cultural events. Today, it houses over 3,000 pieces of folk artifacts and other relics among its collections. The hall is supervised by the Cultural Heritage Section at city’s Cultural Affairs Bureau.
Wenying Hall has a total area of 7,679 square meters with a floor area of 4,710 square meters. With its curvilinear building design that blends with Chinese and Western architectural styles, the passing sunlight creates remarkable shadows inside the ceiling interior.
The refurbished hall has also maintained time-honored Artifacts Preservation Rooms, Taiwanese Block Print Art Special Collection Room and two principal exhibition rooms, which are used as an art and cultural showcase area. Other premises have made significant facelifts. The once parking lot has been developed into an outdoor Starlight Theater, which can accommodate more than 250 audiences. This al-fresco concept performance theater is extensively used for different theatrical performances from amateur groups, community organization to school clubs. The café adjacent to the theater provides meals and drinks, so the audience can watch while enjoying a cup of latte or Hazelnut Milk Tea.
Located on the right side of the main doorway is the Splendor Hall, which was originally known as Zhongzheng Hall. Apart from the extended stage, thick curtains have been placed to enhance the aesthetic feature of the hall. The overall redevelopment of the hall resulted in an excellent conference hall as well as a performance area, equipped with modern sound equipment and lighting system that can cater to various forms of social activities and performances. The Splendor Hall can house 400-500 guests and seating arrangements can be changed to fit on different purposes.
The Splendor Hall has been constructed to house new generations of local artists, performers, and audiences, all of whom can enjoy a better venue for performances and exhibit their splendor. The upper floor classroom has also been changed into a café salon, which can hold more than 100 people. The café can also be used for small-scale performances. These great venues provide bigger opportunities for culture and art lovers, while Wenying Hall, as a whole, is a great place for rest and relaxation as well as artistic pursuit.
Originally an artistic hub in Central Taiwan, Wenying Hall has become even more popular due to the re-launch of Corridor Café Theater and Splendor Hall. The incorporation of dining, café and art that concentrate on performance and stage art, complemented by the artistic and cultural exhibits, provide more variety to art and cultural events in Taichung. Access to the hall is easy and convenient. Just take Taichung City Buses 41, 142 or 163 at the Taichung Railway Station and get ff at the National Taiwan First Senior High School bus stop. The hall is only 5 minutes walk along Sec.1, Shuangshi Road.
