Melaka (or Malacca) is definitely an intriguing Asian city in southwestern Malaysia. Almost all Asian nations have their fair share of mysterious, unique and interesting tour sites and attractions, but Melaka is a totally different kind of trip. Touring in Malacca is an experience that is difficult to forget; it could take centuries before one could wipe away memories of this century-old city.
Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and popular for its century-old buildings and structures. It is home to the oldest European-built church in Malaysia, as well as the oldest Taoist Temple in the peninsula. The port of Malacca is what started the economy of the Malaya Peninsula as it attracted the Chinese, Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch and British. Malacca is simply an amazing city.
There are two cool, unique and fun ways of seeing Malacca that are completely different from the usual city tour packages. These are the Malacca Duck Tour and Bike Tour. Let’s begin with the Duck Tour.
Duck Tour does not mean you will go through popular places related to ducks. Instead, it means you will go around the city riding a duck, a big duck on wheels. Intrigued yet? What is this ride exactly?
The tour is run by Duck Ventures Sdn Bhd, and the marketing manager of this company describes the “Duck” this way. In a report, he described the Duck as a “38-seater craft (that) will have comfort and safety features to allow tourists to enjoy their 45 to 60-minute journey.” It is an amphibious vehicle that drives around the streets of Malacca and onto the man-made island of Malacca. The tour goes through Porta de Santiago, Independence Memorial Museum, Mahkota Parade Mall, and then into the sea to Malacca Island, Pulau Besar and the majestic Masjid Selat Negeri. Oh by the way, the amphibious vehicle looks like a giant duck.
Government officials are excited about how this ride can bolster the tourism industry, giving mobility to tourists without needing to take two separate rides. Tour fee is RM38 for adults and RM22 for children. A package tour for two adults and two children costs RM100.
One the other hand, the Melaka Bike Tour is winning the attention of bikers, adventure seekers, and eco-enthusiasts. This is also referred to as Melacca Ecotour since there are no gasoline or carbons involved. Traveling on a bicycle is the best way to see the off-road. The bike tour takes riders through paddy fields and trails within the rubber and oil palm plantations. It is a very scenic way of seeing the Malacca countryside, as it is healthy and eco-friendly.
We don’t expect all tourists come to Malacca bringing along their bicycles. This is why the bike tour includes bicycles and cycling gears without additional costs. The 20-km tour lasts for about three hours, including the necessary breaks to catch one’s breath and to get friendly with the locals along the way. Tour guides are experienced bikers who know the Malacca countryside like the back of their hands. Touring in Malacca either on a bike or a Duck is an experience that cannot be rivaled anywhere else.
