There are many transportation options available in getting to Agra. You may choose any of the routes available by air or by land transportation. As part of India’s popular Golden Triangle of Agra-Delhi-Jaipur circuit, the city is well-connected via road and rail to other tourist destinations in India.
Where exactly is Agra? The city of Agra lies at the northwest corner of the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, east of Jaipur and southeast of Delhi. It is located at 27.18° north and 78.02° east. Perhaps the biggest boon for this historic city is its close proximity to the Indian capital, which is about 200 kilometers only – this means that if one drives from Delhi, it would only take roughly three hours to get to Agra.
Getting to Agra by air is by far the quickest and most comfortable way of travelling to this beautiful city. However, the service to Kheria Airport, Agra’s local airport, is seasonal. So if you wish to travel by plane directly to the city from any part of India like Chennai, Bangalore, Varanasi, Mumbai, or Calcutta, you need to schedule a chartered flight that is usually offered by almost any domestic airline in India. However, take note that a getting to Agra via chartered flight would mean greater transportation costs.
The Kheria Airport has a Tourist Information Center, as well as transport hiring agencies for car rentals and auto rickshaws. You can avail of any of these to get around the city for sightseeing or as transport to get you to the heart of Agra. Basic facilities are also available at the Kheria Airport, such as snack and refreshment bars, currency exchange stations, and a car park.
As one of the most famous metropolises in India, getting to Agra by land would not be a problem. Agra is situated along the major train line between routes Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Chennai, and a lot of trains link Agra to these places every day.
Another viable option when getting to Agra by land is through its well-connected road networks that link to major tourist destinations in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. It is probably more convenient to travel from Delhi or Jaipur by road as the National Highways offer a worthwhile view and experience of the countryside while driving along India’s rural parts.
You may choose to rent a car or take the state transport bus services to have a feel of India together with the locals. If money is no problem, the best and most luxurious way to get to Agra by land is to travel through the luxury train, Palace on Wheels, which stops at Taj in Agra on its final day.
When travelling to Agra, there are some important things to remember. The schedule of trains in terms of arrivals and departures are subject to changes in cases of accidents, delays, or natural factors. If you wish to get there by train, make sure you reserve in advance. However, if you choose to take a state transport bus, there is no need to book for reservations. Other vehicles, like the Volvo or AC Deluxe, usually require advance booking and are quite expensive.
When getting to Agra during the winter months of November to February, it is important to come up with flexible tour plans because the thick fog can cause problems on visibility. As such, driving by car is not advisable and trains running across North India may arrive ridiculously late.
