Because it offers fun, sun, sand and more, Puerto Galera is fast becoming one of the busiest tourist destinations in the Philippines. There are more than 10 beaches to stroll, more than 30 dive spots to discover, more than 2 lush mountains to trek and more than 5 waterfalls to visit. That’s a lot to cover in just a few days. Instead of hopping from island to island, a more relaxed way of vacationing here is hopping from bar to bar. There are rows of restaurants and bars where tourists could enjoy eating and drinking in Puerto Galera.
There are many restaurants to choose from, each boasting of special dishes and drinks that make it a cut above the rest. It’s difficult to really pinpoint which ones are the best. Consider the list below a suggestion, more than a cut-and-dried ranking:
Number 1: The Hemingway Bar and Restaurant, located at Sabang Beach, is the favorite spot for visiting writers and celebrities. Its menu represents the many travels of the popular writer, Earnest Hemingway, serving Caribbean, Italian and Spanish-inspired dishes. The easy favorites in this Western Mediterranean restaurant are the pasta and seafood paella. If you are eating with someone, expect to spend about Php400 (approx. USD 9) for a meal for two with drinks.
Sabang Beach is the most popular beach in Puerto Galera for foreign tourists. It is so jam-packed with satisfied foreigners that some of them refuse to go back to their home countries. It is not a surprise that the best dining experiences are in Sabang. There are rows of bars and discos that entertain until the early hours of the morning. There are also cheap hotels and accommodations.
Number 2: Captain Greggs, also found in Sabang. The ambiance is unique, mimicking a ship with life rafts and ropes, which is appropriate since it has a good view of the sea. The specialty here is anything with prawns: buttered, curried, steamed, and so on. The Western dishes are also very satisfying. Lunch for two with drinks is about Php300 (approx. USD 7). Vegetarians will also love Captain Greggs for their array of vegetable and seafood dishes.
Number 3: Tamarind Restaurant, yet another restaurant in Sabang. It is known for its steaks and pork ribs. At dinnertime, beer and liquor begin to flow.
Number 4: Point Bar at Small La Laguna Beach. This elevated restaurant is for honeymooners who desire to have a quiet, romantic dinner with an amazing view. Small La Laguna Beach is known to be a complete contrast of Sabang Beach. While Sabang is all about party, party, party, Small La Laguna is about tranquility. Eating and drinking here is more for those who wish to peacefully unwind at a lovely dinner table.
Number 5: El Galleon Restaurant, also in Small La Laguna Beach. Near the El Galleon Resort, this peaceful restaurant offers international dishes: American, European, Mexican, Asian, and, of course, Filipino.
Other interesting restaurants that deserve a visit are the Floating Bar, Coco Aroma, Marti’s Bar, Toko’s, Badladz, Sharkees and the Yacht Club, among many others.
This list certainly does not mean that there are not many more amazing places for eating and dining in Puerto Galera. There are also a number of food kiosks along the beaches that offer exotic, delicious foods at very affordable prices. The best thing to do, really, is to make your own list by trying whatever catches your eye or appetite.
