The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall was built in honor of China’s national father, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. It is located in Xinyi District, which is on the eastern part of Taipei. The building is large, occupying an area of 29,464 squre meters, and sits on an equally large park of 115,000 square meters.
Dr. Sun Yat-Sen is highly respected and well loved by the Chinese because he dedicated his life to making China a powerful and prosperous nation. The government decided to construct the memorial hall to help the nation remember his character, the things he accomplished in his career, and his great plans for achieving a modern China. The construction of the building was finished on May 16, 1972, eight years after it was started.
The design of the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall was made by Wang Ta-hung. A contest was held for the building’s design, and Wang Ta-hung’s was chosen and implemented for the memorial hall, with some modifications ordered by Chiang Kai-shek to incorporate Chinese architecture in the design. The overall structure was based on the grand design of a Chinese palace. The groundbreaking ceremony for the building was held in 1965.
When you enter the memorial hall, you will be greeted by a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Inside the building, you will find displays related to the history and birth of the Republic of China. You will also see displays about the life of China’s founding father and his contributions to the nation. One of the things that tourists love to watch is the formal changing of the memorial hall’s guards, which takes place every hour.
Aside from being a place to pay tribute to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the memorial hall also serves academic, recreational, and cultural purposes. It has an extensive library with a collection of more than 300,000 books. The library can accommodate up to 400 people.
It also has a large concert hall with modern facilities and equipment. The hall can seat 3,000 guests. Artworks are often featured in the four exhibition rooms of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall while academic lectures are held in the lecture room. The building has a multimedia theater, a 1,000-square meter exhibition center, and an audio-visual center.
If the memorial hall’s interior is splendid, its exterior is just as remarkable. The building is surrounded by a large open space where people go to rollerskate, fly kites, or take leisure walks. The gardens and willow trees in the park, which is called Zhongshan Park, create a peaceful environment that many people love.
The memorial hall is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm. If you want to commute to the site, you can take the MRT and go down at the National Doctor Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall station. You may also take buses that pass by the site. For a very low admission fee, you can enter the grand Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. To accommodate guests of different nationalities, multilingual tours are offered in English, Japanese, and some European languages. The brochures being given out at the memorial hall have English, Spanish, French, German, and Korean translations.
