Situated in Fuxing Township, the Xiao Wulai Scenic Area consists of numerous waterfalls and plenty of stunning gorges, and it is the home to the aboriginal tribe of the Atayal. The term ‘Xiao Wulai’ is derived from the Atayal word that means Little Springs. One should not be confused between Xiao Wulai in Taoyuan and the Wulai Scenic Area found in New Taipei City, although both are popular for their beautiful spring and interesting aboriginal culture.
Also known as Little Wulai Scenic Area, it is rich in natural resources and natural wonders like Xiao Wulai Waterfall, Longfong Waterfall, Wind Moving Rock and the recently developed transparent skywalk for spectacular views of Xiao Wulai Fall. The Xiao Wulai Waterfall is one of the most picturesque geographical marvels in Taoyuan with its three levels. Categorized as a fault hanging valley-type waterfall, the middle section appears to be the most stunning among the three sections. The peak of the stream tends to narrow like a small street, and then meets in the ruined formation cape. With the water gushing 50 meters straight to the deep pond at the bottom, it offers beautiful scenery, which is best viewed from the skywalk or from the observation deck. Visitors cannot get near the waterfall proper as the ways are blocked by the park authorities. A couple of pavilions are constructed near the waterfall but you still can’t get near there.
Yet another interesting sight in Xiao Wulai is the Wind Moving Rock or Fengchueishih, a 50-ton boulder that appears unsteadily balanced without rolling down. The transparent skywalk is a 24-storey structure that accommodates only 50 persons at a time and is the best way to view Fengchueishih and Little Wulai Fall in a closer look. It is open daily except Monday, from 8am to 5pm. For sightseers who don’t get the chance to get in the skywalk, you may walk around the scenic area through the trails.
The bird-watching season usually begins from May to June, then skip to November until February of following year. You can experience pleasant moments of the forest shower watching the waterfall as well as the colorful birds. Xiao Wulai Waterfall does not experience drought even during dry season in winter. The strong flow of the waterfall comes from Yunei Stream, which is also due to the plentiful rain occurring in the area.
The best part about the Xiao Wulai Scenic Area is the fantastic view of the surroundings, especially the waterfall. You will not only witness the forceful drop of the waterfall but also a panoramic view of the valleys and mountains. It is worth it to note that getting to the skywalk does not involve any form of hiking; you can even get there by car.
One of the nearest places of interest near Xiao Wulai is the Shihmen Reservoir as the scenic area is located at the upper part of the reservoir. Access to Xiao Wulai Scenic Area is easy, just take the Taoyuan Bus 5105 from Taoyuan Train Station, from Dasi or from Zhongli Train Station until you reach the scenic area.
