Puerto Galera is often compared to Boracay, particularly for its white-sand beaches. Both these leading Philippine tourist attractions have a White Beach with powdery white beaches and filled with fun water activities such as snorkeling, water skiing, and windsurfing, among others. Also, both white beaches are almost always packed with local and foreign tourists, their shorelines filled with beautiful people and bodies being caressed by the tropical sun.
So how does Puerto Galera compare to Boracay?
First, the famous white beaches: while Boracay White Beach may be longer and more popular, the White Beach in Puerto Galera has fewer commercial establishments and is set in a backdrop of towering mountains and lush jungles. While Boracay is now too commercialized, the commerce and modernization in Puerto Galera is just right for those who want a bit more Nature in their vacation experience, even while having enough of modernization’s amenities to provide the comforts that tourists need.
Puerto Galera is the most popular beach tourist attraction in Luzon. It is located in Oriental Mindoro, about 130 kilometers away from the capital city of Manila. Compared with far-away Boracay, Puerto Galera is just a bus and ferry ride from the country’s main metropolis. That is another plus for Puerto Galera if we are to compare these two popular tropical beaches. Boracay is significantly farther.
To reach Puerto Galera from Manila, take either a JAM or BLTB bus en route Batangas Pier. From Batangas Pier there are many ferry boats and RORO vessels going to several points in Puerto Galera. Until today, though, there are no direct flights to Puerto Galera. This is the main reason why its beaches have not been over-commercialized yet. The only airport in the island of Mindoro is the San Jose airport in Occidental Mindoro, which is still a lengthy bus ride away from Puerto Galera.
Puerto Galera has a number of enticing beaches, in which respect it more or less stands equal to Boracay. The most popular of the Puerto Galera beaches is White Beach. Located a few kilometers from the heart of Puerto Galera, White Beach regularly holds concerts and live shows, especially in summer. To reach this beach, look for the ferry boats at Batangas Pier that go directly to White Beach. There are not many of them, so just in case you miss them, take the ones that go to Muelle Pier. From there, take a jeepney or tricycle going to the beach. For first-time foreign tourists, it is a cultural experience riding the jeepney or tricycle, the two most popular forms of transport in the country.
Meanwhile, the other beaches in Puerto Galera are Sabang Beach, Big La Laguna Beach, Small La Laguna Beach, Coco Beach, and Talipanan Beach, to name a few. Sabang Beach is very popular for its row of bars, discos, nightclubs, and cheap accommodations. Sabang is mostly visited by foreigners wanting to have all-night drinking sprees and parties. Unlike White Beach, it is not a place for family fun time and rest, but it is still a diver’s paradise. Puerto Galera beaches are home to colorful marine reefs and an array of tropical fishes.
So maybe, in the end, the comparison just boils down to the differences between the two places’ beaches. Boracay has beautiful white sand locations world-famous and definitely world-visited. On the other hand, Puerto Galera also has similar locations but with less of the choked traffic that Boracay experiences. It has everything that tourists are looking for – rest, clean sands, a White Beach, dive spots, and shops; and less of what tourists are now trying to avoid – too much commercialism.
