The Art Museum Parkway or simply ‘The Parkway’ is perhaps, the best place in Taichung where people go to relax or hang out and it’s very easy to see why. With its pedestrian and bike-friendly infrastructure, this particular thoroughfare in WuQuan West Fourth Street is the start of a creatively inspiring excursion as a multitude of artworks are exhibited along the stretch of the road.
The artistically stimulating street, WuQuan West 4th Street is locally known as ‘The Parkway’. The green walkway in the middle of the road is painted with various ranges of colors that stick out among the displayed artworks. Resembling an exhibition of artistic crafts, the notable Dali-style seats and boulder decorations sitting alongside the path are refreshing to the eyes. The verdant green environment surrounding the parkway offers the needed break from the fuss of city life. Obviously, this visitor-friendly spot is a smoke-free zone.
One of the highly photographed sites in Taichung City is the iconic figure called the King’s Seat, which can be found at the corner of the parkway, on the WuQuan 3rd Street intersection. The unique beetle-shaped chair is made from steel, with an adult size dimension. Many visitors, both locals and foreigners, regard the King’s Seat as the most famous seat in Taichung with numerous people taking turns sitting on it while taking photos.
With the presence of colorful and remarkable scenery, The Parkway has become one of the most highly recommended places for lovers and newlyweds for their wedding photos. Don’t be surprised to see several bride-groom pairs shooting their pre-nup videos together with their assistant, make-up artists and photographers as they pose on restaurants and other unique spots along the street.
While strolling along The Parkway, you will find that the delectable aroma of local dishes fills the air. As you keep on observing, you will be amazed that the artistic structures constructed along the sidewalks are in fact cafes and restaurants. Every restaurant has its individual eclectic concepts or themes, providing the area with a quaint and picturesque feeling. Stretching along the WuQuan 5th Street until WuQuan 7th Street, visitors can find menus of delicious food, both international and local food, including Turkish, French, American, Chinese, Japanese, Mediterranean, Taiwanese, etc. This spectacular venue of international cafes and restaurants has created an unforgettable sight for tourists visiting this place for the first time. One will never run out of food choices for a great meal, not to mention tasting various foreign dishes in one place, topped off by a relaxing walk along the adjacent green belt.
The cuisines are mostly in the mid-to-high price bracket, and can range from Italian to Taiwanese with famous restaurants including Santorini, Little Italy, Bretagne, Leelavadee, Fleur del Sel, Moment in Peking, Le Jardin de Giverny, Shanghai 1924, Istanbul and Pumpkin House.
Besides the food, street performers occasionally appear at The Parkway to present instant shows, entertaining the crowds. People who plan to dine during holidays and weekends are advised to book beforehand, as it gets crowded during these days. At the north end of this famous street is the Taichung Cultural Center, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the surrounding park.
