Aside from the famous eight thousanders and the popular trekking destinations, there are other Nepal mountains that will arouse your interest. One of them is Cho Oyu, which means turquoise goddess. This is the sixth highest mountain in Nepal. It stands 8,201 meters above sea level. The mountain is situated in the Himalayas, along the Nepal and China border. Many people consider Cho Oyu as the easiest to climb of the eight thousanders in Nepal.
Among the eight thousanders, Cho Oyu was the fifth one to have a successful ascent to the peak in 1954. It was first attempted by a British expedition in 1952. The team members included Tom Bourdillon, Edmund Hillary, and team leader Eric Shipton. Their expedition had to be stopped because of technical difficulties. They faced the danger of an avalanche. Aside from this, they were warned of the presence of Chinese troops near the border. The first successful climb to Cho Oyu happened on October 19, 1954. It was done by Herbert Tichy and Joseph Jochler, who were part of an Austrian expedition. They were accompanied by Sherpa Pasang Dawa.
Notable among other Nepal mountains is Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh highest mountain with an altitude of 8,167. The first part of its name, dhawala, is Sanskrit for the words white, dazzling, and beautiful while the last part of its name, giri, simply means mountain. Its highest and easternmost peak is referred to as Dhaulagiri I. Dhaulagiri is 34 kilometers west of Annapurna. To its south lies the trekking gateway town of Pokhara. As of 2007, Dhaulagiri has been successfully climbed 358 times, with a total of 58 fatalities.
Singu Chuli is actually a part of Annapurna. It is a trekking peak; it is not a distinct mountain. It is included in the list of other Nepal mountains because its peak, often referred to as the fluted peak, is the third highest of all of Nepal’s trekking peaks. Singu Chuli is not exceptionally beautiful but it is a very difficult climb. The mountain slopes are steep with vertical climbs near the peak, and the peak itself is a block of snow-covered ice. Climbing it will require special ice climbing equipment. People climbing Singu Chuli need to secure a $350 permit, which is good for a four-member team. Treks to Singu Chuli can take up to 24 days.
If you are going to climb Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, and other Nepal mountains, there are a few things you should take note of. First, the snow line usually falls at 5,000 to 5,500 meters. At the snow line, you should expect extremely cold temperatures and rough topography. The trekking and climbing areas in Nepal are not heavily populated. Most communities in the country are found in river basins and low valleys. You must always abide by the regulations set by the Nepalese government. Secure all the necessary permits. Avoid activities that may be offensive to the local community. Always respect the place you are visiting, particularly temples and other religious sites. Likewise, show respect to the local customs.
