For many years, Maenam Beach has been known as a backpacker’s destination because of the affordable accommodations that are found there. The village is lined with at least 7 kilometers of fine white sand, with coconut trees growing along the coastline. Found on Ko Samui’s northernmost end, it gives its visitors a stunning view of Ko Phangan. Its location also affords its visitors the best sunset views in Ko Samui.
You can easily reach the village public transport. If you are coming from Na Thon pier, you can hire a songthaew for 50 Baht. But if you are visiting Maenam from Chaweng, the rate for songthaew ranges from 50 to 100 Baht. Unlike other villages, Maenam does not have a beach road. This means if you want to check out different accommodations along the coast, you would have to walk along the beach to go from one facility to another.
The main road stretches toward the pier instead of the beach, and along it, you will find restaurants, cafes, and some shops offering diving tours and diving gear for rent. With the main road a bit far off, the beach is free from the sound of passing vehicles. You can easily get around the village in a motorbike. Don’t expect to see a lot of commercial establishments, though, because the village is a bit laid back and is not that commercially developed.
Perhaps its being laid back is what makes Maenam Beach the preferred place for those who wish to have a quiet getaway. In this place, dynamic parties that last until the wee hours of the morning are not a common sight, which is a welcome change for those who long for tranquil beaches. The waters are also shallow a long way out from the shore, which is perfect for those who are bringing their children for a holiday.
Accommodations in Maenam Beach are pretty affordable. You can rent a room for 400 to 700 Baht in a resort with decent facilities and a swimming pool. During peak seasons, accommodations in Maenam fill up quickly. Food is also cheap, but it’s certainly not poor in taste. Mister Pu is a famous restaurant on the village. It offers all you can eat meat barbeque for just 89 Baht. Eddy’s Modern Food and Drinks provides generous servings of popular dishes with prices that are easy on the pocket as well. Angela’s Bakery has a café where you can order freshly baked bread. It also serves breakfast.
There are also high-end accommodations in Maenam Beach, and if you are not so budget conscious, you can book your stay in any of these. Kirikayan Luxury Pool Villas and Spa offers suites for 7,000 Baht during low season and 8,500 during high season. Their exclusive villas are much more expensive, with rates ranging from 14,500 to 44,500. Saree Samui is another paradise-like high-end resort with private villas. The rates range from 14,000 to 34,000 Baht. Saree Samui has one of the largest pools in Ko Samui. Its restaurant serves both traditional Thai and international cuisines.
