Situated alongside the old Zhongzheng Park, the Taichung City Zhongshan Hall (also known as Chung-shan Hall) has been operating for over 20 years. It covers an area of about 33, 500 square meters while the building itself has a floor area of 16,600 square meters. The hall has two basement levels and three floors above ground. It is one of the city’s main performance buildings for various local and international stage performances such as musicals, opera, ballet, theatricals, etc.
The building has a unique architectural style with a quarter-circle design above the building, forming a beautiful arc exterior. It is fronted by a huge entrance plaza, with statues of two men dancing and blowing horn. Audience seating is separated into two levels, accommodating 1,692 people, making it one of the biggest performance halls in Central Taiwan. The hall has the deepest, highest and widest stage for performance in Taiwan. Highly equipped with world-class stage, light and suspension systems, it is perhaps, the venue with the most perfect functions.
The Zhongshan Hall consists of five departments that functions together to meet different kinds of performing needs, namely the sound system, the piano room, the stage equipment, the dressing room and the lighting system.
The sound system of the hall is principally composed of effect controller, mixer, amplifier and speaker. The main amplifiers uses line array speakers and attached above the stage proscenium. Also included are the subwoofers to meet the varying demands of performances. On the other hand, the Piano Room has four large grand pianos including Yamaha, Steinway, Bosendorfer and Kawai as well as one small Yamaha piano.
The stage measures 17 meters in width, 15 meters in depth and 10 meters in height, with the lifting orchestra measuring 4.6 meters in depth. The suspension system is set with facilities such as a tormentor, fire curtain, teaser, main curtain, border, sound eflective board, CYC electric, black drop, travel curtain and RP. Its dressing room consists of vanities and bathrooms for men and women as well as showers for after rehearsals. Nine personal dressing rooms are available, each with personal closet and bath facilities. To allow performers to determine the stage-performing condition synchronously, a broadcasting system and stereo monitors are also installed.
An important component of Zhongshan Hall is its lighting system with main facilities including light dimmers, lighting channels, systems, controller and equipments. Its lighting system equipment can be categorized as overhead lighting, outer lighting and side lighting. Under overhead lighting are spotlight lighting, Fresnel light and Far Cyc lighting.
With the complete theater and stage facilities, it is always considered as the first option to be a performance venue for popular foreign and domestic performing groups. Zhongshan Hall is under the supervision of Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City government. It is specifically located at 98 Xueshi Road at North District. When getting to the hall, you can head to Taichung Train Station by taking Taichung Bus 3, Renyou Bus 25 or U Bus 61. Indeed, Taichung best represents the country as the ‘Culture City’ with the active cultural movement along with numerous performance and exhibition venues across the city.
