It is a well-known fact among all Taiwanese and even foreigners living in the country for a while that the best weather in Taiwan is located in Taichung City, at the west of central Taiwan. Many foreigners often compare the weather in Taichung similar to California due to the frequency of sunny hot days. The general climate of Taichung also experiences four seasons (summer, winter, spring and autumn) in varying months.
Taichung is blessed with a pleasing weather. The subtropical monsoon climate brings the city southern winds from months June to August and northern winds from October until May. The lowest temperature peaks in winter months January and February while the highest temperature arrives in summer months July, August and September. The difference of temperature between winter and summer rarely exceeds about 16 degree Celsius. But there will be short periods in winter when the temperature hardly rises above 10 degree Celsius.
The weather in Taichung has an average annual temperature of 23 degree Celsius, average humidity of 80% and an annual rainfall of about 1700mm. Indeed, the city enjoys mild weather for the rest of the year. Rainfall starts in the wet season, from May to August and barely in the dry season, during October to February. The distinct landscape of Taichung Basin, with Central Mountain Range in its east and Miaoli Hills in the north provides Taichung City the protection from ravaging typhoons. However, typhoons still occur in the city, emerging from South China Sea. This often brings torrential rain and flooding which pose serious threat to the city, evidenced by the Wayne Typhoon in 1986 that hit Taiwan from the west coast close to Taichung. In addition, by being in a valley and not getting much rain, the city has air quality problems the entire year.
On the mountainous tail of Taichung region, the temperature is relatively lower in general depending on the altitude. Despite having humid subtropical climate, rare occasions of winter snow can be seen on the apex of Xue-Shan Mountain, which fittingly means ‘Snow Mountain’.
The city experiences four seasons all throughout the year. Sunny and warm spring season starts from March to May with a temperature range of 19-25. Summer follows characterized by humid and hot weather at 27-32 from June to August. The cool autumn season comes during September to November at 21-30, followed by winter from December to February at 16-23. Taichung City often has southeast and north-west winds during the summer and northeast and north winds during spring, winter and fall.
In general, the weather of Taichung is pleasant as it has fewer rainy days, comfortable average temperature and more sunshine compared to the extremely humid climate in the north and hot weather in south. In addition, its comfortable location, being surrounded by hills and mountains in the north and east and Taiwan Strait in the west, is another contributing factor to its mild weather. Its general amazing weather, less humidity, less typhoon and less rain makes Taichung City one of the ideal places to visit in Taiwan.
