You know that a leading metropolis as Mumbai in India is serious in its attempt to becoming a major tourist destination if it houses a modern amusement theme park such Tokyo’s Disneyland, Hong Kong’s Ocean Park and Seoul’s Lotte World. The city of Mumbai has its own — Essel World.
Essel World is a 64-acre wide amusement park located in Gorai, Mumbai. It attracts over 10,000 visitors every day. It opened in 1986, and now it operates more than 34 major rides, other than those involving water. It had a slow start when it opened but only after five years, it has become a major destination in India. In 1998, the second part of the theme park was constructed, the Water Kingdom. Today, this exciting Indian theme park is actually considered as two parks in one: the main section is Essel World proper, and the other is the Water Kingdom.
The major rides and attractions within the main park are the Big Apple, Fuji Aqua Dive, Monster, Slippery Sultan, and an ice skating rink called Arctic Circle. It doesn’t snow in India, which is why people love the Arctic Circle as a way to somehow experience white winter. However, admission is a bit on the expensive side, and so there are very few repeat customers. Still, Arctic Circle is generating much attention since this 1,036-square-meter rink is the country’s first.
The Big Apple, on the other hand is a roller coaster for children. It is not as scary as adults would want a roller coaster ride to be, but the kids enjoy riding on a green giant caterpillar careening through giant apples along the surrounding tall trees. Other rides specifically for children are Play Pot, Junior Go Carting, Happy Sky, Children’s Boat Ride, Junior Carousel and Nataraj Caterpillar, among others. The adults might want to check out Thunder, Cadbury’s Zyclone, Enterprise and Slippery Sultan, to name a few. Slippery Sultan is definitely not for the weak of heart. The ride shakes, rocks, and spins its bamboozled passengers at rocking high speed for a truly unforgettable hair-raising experience. Another scary ride is the Monster, which is a spinning ride on the Monster’s fast-moving tentacles.
There are also a number of rides that may be enjoyed by everyone in the family. Among the favorites are Tilt-a-Whirl, Zipper dipper, Riki’s Rocking Alley, Road Train, Crazy Cups, Highway Cars, Fun Net, Hedge Maze, and Haunted Hotel. Other interesting fun attractions are Cricket Zone, Hoola Loop, Playport, Senior Dodgem, Slam Bob, and a lot more.
These are just the ones found inside the main park. There are many more exciting thrills inside the Water Kingdom, such as Turbo Thriller, Lemon Drops, Serpent Safari, Elephant Safari, Goofer’s Lagoon, Drifting River, Jungle Beach, Coco Beach, and What-a-Coaster, among many others. What-a-Coaster is said to be one of the longest and tallest water slides in the world. The main attraction in Water Kingdom is the Aquadrome, a wet and wild dance arena with pulsating music, lighting effects, and rotating showers and sprinklers.
These are the many reasons why you should visit Essel World, and there are definitely no reasons not to. To get there, take the Express Highway to Kashimira for a 50-minute scenic drive through a beautiful landscape. The park is open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day.
