Southeast Asia is known for the most pristine, glamorous and attractive beaches in the world. The list includes Phuket (Thailand), Boracay (Philippines), Bali (Indonesia), and Langkawi (Malaysia); even the lesser known beaches in these countries can rival the best in the world. Add to this list the inviting Brunei beaches, which may not be as popular yet, but definitely worth checking out.
Brunei is a tiny sun-kissed country in the island of Borneo very near the Philippines and embraced by the eastern provinces of the Sarawak state of Malaysia. It has a total coastal area of 161 km facing the South China Sea. Its other nearby neighbors are Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Singapore across South China Sea to the west. The island of Borneo is also partly shared by Indonesia.
Located near the equator, Brunei enjoys warm tropical climate throughout the year, which is perfect when hitting the beach. Brunei has five major beaches that make up the ribbon of sun-drenched beaches that enjoy a mighty view of the sun as it sinks into the South China Sea. These five beaches are Muara Beach, Serasa Beach, Meragang Beach, Pantai Seri Kenangan Beach, and Lumut Beach. The most often mentioned and frequently visited are the beaches of Muara and Serasa.
The town of Muara is not more than 27 km from the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan. “Muara” in Malay means “estuary” or “a partly enclosed coastal body of water.” The surrounding waters play an important role in this district’s economy and tourism. Muara is known to host the only deepwater port in Brunei and part of this port contains the Royal Dutch Shell petroleum facilities. Brunei is a wealthy country primarily and largely due to the presence of petroleum and natural gas.
The port of Muara is also popular as a gateway to several off-shore islands as well as to provincial destinations in Malaysia. The world-famous Selirong Island is only about 45 minutes from the coast of Muara.
The most important water destination and tourist attraction in the district is Muara Beach, although Serasa Beach is not very far away. Mile-long Muara Beach has amazing clear white sand and a peaceful esplanade. Visiting guests and families love to take long and blissful walks along the walkway, enjoying the view and breeze from the sea. Muara Beach also offers picnic areas, toilet and changing facilities, and a children’s playground. On weekends, a number of food and drink stalls are set up along the esplanade and by the beach, offering a perfect weekend getaway for everyone.
Ten minutes away from Muara is the lively Serasa Beach. This is where exciting water sports and competitions take place. The Serasa Watersports Complex offers exciting water activities, such as jet-skiing, kayaking, sailing, power boat competitions, windsurfing and water skiing. These make Serasa irresistible to adventure-seeking tourists.
Meanwhile, for tourists who go for a kind of fun that involves quiet and peaceful moments by the beach, the best destination among all other Brunei beaches is the scenic Pantai Seri Kenangan Beach. Located at Kuala Tutong, Pantai Seri is made more beautiful by the narrow piece of land that separates South China Sea and Tutong River. Vacationing here is extremely blissful and memorable.
