Bohol

Bohol

The Jewel of the Philippines, Bohol is a gorgeously lush gem in the Philippine archipelago, what with its rolling hills and turquoise rivers. This is the home too of one of the rarest yet well-known small primates of the world: the inspiration for Spielberg’s ET, the tiny, bug-eyed tarsier.

But tarsier-watching is not the only thing Bohol can offer the tourist. You can bask in the country’s charming historic heritage, for one thing, by visiting the many colonial Spanish churches and capiz-windowed structures throughout the island. You can sample it in the local fare as well, which combines Southeast Asian and Spanish influences in many dishes. And speaking of fare, don’t forget to try the delicious local honey, which is believed to also have medicinal properties and is exported to many other places in the Philippines.

Nature presents some fascinating facets in this jewel of an island, from the coconut-lined Lomboc River (where you can enjoy cruises as well as meals from floating restaurants) to the world-famous Chocolate Hills. These hills make up one of the wonders of the Philippines, and they are certainly a wonder of the world as well: to this day, scientists remain uncertain about the precise way in which these curious mounds were formed, and even after the 2013 earthquake that hit the region, over a thousand of them still peek up from the ground, like colossal molehills formed by a particularly perfectionist giant mole.

Bohol’s waters are appealing as well, and offer much to the eager water sportsman. You can swim, dive, and snorkel to your heart’s content in these blue waters. And even if you don’t enjoy being in the water, you can at least take time to enjoy the sands—which are so white and fine that private beaches and resorts around the world actually pay to have them shipped to their location.

Bohol is definitely one of the places to go to when you visit the Philippines, a crowning jewel in this fine collection of tropical islands. Be sure to take in as much of it as you can on your visit, for this is one place where memories made are sure to be worthwhile.

The Baclayon Church is the oldest Catholic stone-built church in the Philippines that provides a rich early history of the province of Bohol. It was constructed during the Spanish occupation as the very first Spanish Missionaries or Doctrineros settled in the area during the late 15th Century. Today, the original stone church can still be seen at Tagbilaran, Bohol.

Bohol is a haven for old and well-preserved churches in the region but the Church of Bacalayon is the most well-preserved among all of them. The erected building of the church used to be known as the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The area where the church stands was formerly the home of Spanish Jesuit missionaries when they initially arrived in the country. However, many locals believed that the Jesuits were forced to leave the area and move their headquarters to the town of Loboc in order to avoid being mobbed by Moro raiders. …

A local planter who was cutting up weeds to give space for his plants became the discoverer of the cave when he noticed a large hole during his weeding. Curious, the farmer thought that the hole led to something else: thus he decided to drop a stone to find out if there was some kind of surface below. To his surprise, he heard the sound of water coming from the hole. He immediately concluded that it was no ordinary hole but one that led to a cave. Since the hole was too small for the farmer to pass, he started looking for another passageway that might give him access to the cavern. And thus, the Hinagdanan Cave was discovered. …

Dagohoy Marker in Bohol
Dagohoy Marker in Bohol – Philippines

The Francisco Dagohoy Cave is particularly popular in Bohol due to its rich historical value to the people of the province. The cave is named after Filipino patriot, Francisco Dagohoy, who led the longest revolt in Philippine History. His rebellion lasted 85 years from 1744 to 1829. Local inhabitants claim that the cave served as the patriot’s hideout during the rebellion and fight against the Spaniards back in the 18th Century. Dagohoy and his men were mostly Boholano natives, used the cave as a hideout and as their headquarters for the length of their revolt. Suitably enough, the cave has an underwater passage that leads to dry land, which became useful every time Dagohoy and his rebels had to escape the raid of the cave by the Spaniards. …
