Bandung

Bandung

Long dubbed “The Paris of Java”, Bandung is already a famed tourist center even before international travelers are added to the equation. This is the weekend/holiday getaway for most Jakartans, after all, as well as a special holidaymaking place for many other Indonesians. Situated as it is in the central highlands of the country, it is wonderfully accessible from many other Indonesian tourist cities, and is also happily endowed with a surprisingly mild and pleasing climate in comparison to the rest of Indonesia’s must-see locations.

One of the most fetching things about Bandung has to be the patent mark of Dutch influence on its face: many a Bandung building harks back to the old Dutch era and it will be immediately apparent to the visitor which buildings these are. The Dutch were fond of art deco when they were in Bandung, and so left beautiful examples of this style in the city, such as the Villa Isola and the Gedung Merdeka.

But Bandung is not really a place known for being stuck in the past. This is actually one of the technological centers of Indonesia, as well as the location of some of its most famous universities. Bandung is ripe with intellectualism and modernity, which means you can look forward to a charmingly sophisticated culture from the people of the city.

There are places galore to see. There is the wonderful resort city of Lembang, for example, as well as the beautiful crater lake of Kawah Putih. There is Mount Tangkuban Perahu, whose crater you can reach by car. If you need something even more exciting you can trek to Kawah Domas to see some frighteningly hellish-looking volcanic activity. And when you start to feel hungry, you can pop back into the city proper and head on over to Burangrang Street, which was actually inaugurated the culinary street of the city—just passing by this amazing place will get your mouth watering enough to start a second flood fit for Noah.

Bandung is truly a place you need to see if you ever come to Indonesia and need a break. Cool and collected, this highland city is nevertheless able to provide thrills when you need it.

Thus, here is a quick guide on the need-to-know information before heading to the Bandung City of Indonesia.

Health in Bandung
Bandung Adventist Hospital – Indonesia

All travelers headed to Bandung should visit their personal physician or travel clinic about 4 to 8 weeks prior to their departure. Discuss with your doctor any necessary shots or vaccinations to prevent any contact with diseases. Some notable anti-vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Polio, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Typhoid, Tetanus-diphtheria, and Yellow Fever. Although not all shots are required, some vaccinations will depend on your length of stay and activities lined up. …

Where to Go Shopping in Bandung

November 23, 2013 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Bandung is famous for being a shopping paradise of Indonesia. Many residents of Jakarta flock to Bandung during the weekend for some retail therapy. For most part, there are tons of factory outlets here that sell genuine products, rejects and fake items. No matter what your budget is, shopping in Bandung can surely accommodate anyone.

There are both shopping districts and shopping malls in Bandung that are popular among shopaholics. Being colonized by the Dutch in the past, the town also has a handful of old yet appealing Dutch colonial houses that have been converted into factory outlets. Although there are some designer labels, you will certainly struggle to find luxury brands as most high-end stores are factory outlets while the rest remain bargains. Still, Bandung certainly provides something for everybody with the many places you can go to for shopping. …

Guide on What to Pack and What to Wear in Bandung

November 23, 2013 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Bandung is often referred to as the “City of Flowers” to many residents of Indonesia. It is a popular weekend getaway for many residents of Jakarta who come here to shop at its many shopping outlets and to enjoy the relatively cool weather of Bandung. Although Indonesians may know what to expect of Bandung, travelers from different parts of the globe may not be as informed. Here is a guide on what to pack and what to wear in Bandung.

What to Wear in Bandung
Casual wear in Bandung – Indonesia
  1. Knowing what to wear generally depends on where you come from. If you come from a relatively cold country, bring light-colored casual clothes with you. The same goes for people from hot countries with the exception of bringing a jacket with you especially when going to high places that surround the city (since you are more likely to feel the cold than someone accustomed to it). Bandung is relatively cooler than Bali and Jakarta so it may get cold in the mornings and evenings. …

Options on Getting around Bandung

November 23, 2013 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Getting around Bandung can get quite confusing and frustrating, especially to first-time tourists. Finding your way around the city is not too easy as transport in the city is not too well-developed. There is no mass transit system, metro or tram, so tourists need to make use of public minibuses, taxis or rented cars to get around the city.

Getting around in Bandung by mini-buses (Angkot)

Although bus lines are plenty, they do not cover the entire city. They mostly cater the longer inner-city routes from end to end such as north to south destinations or east to west directions. The city buses are named DAMRI and are often vague and difficult to predict in their route. Simply raise your hand to call a mini-bus to stop, hop on board, check your destination and pay the corresponding price. …

Travel Options for Getting to Bandung

November 23, 2013 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Because Bandung is not a major city hub, the easiest way to get to the city is going through Jakarta, which is Indonesia’s capital. Unlike most cities in Indonesia that rely on sea ports, Bandung is practically a basin found in the middle of the island, surrounded by plenty of mountains. Despite its centered location, getting to Bandung is easy with the many transport options available.

Getting to Bandung
Hussein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung – Indonesia

Although getting to Bandung by air is the fastest option, it may not be as convenient. Since Bandung is a valley being surrounded by rugged mountains, landing and taking-off from the small and only airport may be quite a challenge for some pilots. In bad weather, it may be difficult to depart and arrive at the Hussein Sastranegara Airport, especially because there is a high possibility of cancellation of flights due to unfortunate weather conditions. In addition to that, the airport can only cater to small or medium-sized airplanes because of its conservative surroundings. …
