Cambodia

The Character of Cambodia

Cambodia, once a mighty kingdom, now a country triumphantly overcoming its bitter past. Cambodia or Kampuchea has seen both good times and bad throughout its lifetime, and now, as it rises from the ashes of its recent travails, it does so as a phoenix, ready to burst into a glorious and brilliant flame once again.

Cambodia used to be a significant power in the region, though: far stronger than it certainly is now. This is the seat of Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world (and certainly one of the most impressive preserved), as well as Angkor itself, the largest pre-industrial city in the world. At its zenith the kingdom was unrivalled in the area, although its nadir—arguably the dawn of the Khmer Rouge centuries later—would sink it into near-infamy. One, in fact, that has ironically aided its tourism by bringing in visitors to the war sites and memorials… to such tear-strewn places as the Killing Fields.

But Cambodia deserves to be visited and known for so much more than the Khmer Rouge’s regime. This is a place where you can visit quaint villages like Kampong Cham right along the Mekong and sample the local flavor and relish for life, a place where ancient ruins like Preah Vihar and Koh Ker can be found cradled by untamed tropical lush. This is the country of such seaside getaways as Sihanoukville and Kep, with their sapphire-blue waters, where even the past horrors of the Khmer Rouge seem to wash away into the seas of serenity.

Cambodia to today’s traveler is hardly the dangerous country it was before, yet it still manages to offer more than its share of excitement and adventure. Its checkered history has left it with a fascinatingly checkered topography as well, where aggressive modernization (as in Siam Reap) can coexist with pockets of wild mystery like the Cardamom and Elephant Mountains. This is a world with many worlds within it, which is guaranteed to make even the most jaded traveler salivate at the prospect of a visit.

Sihanoukville’s Two Important Pagodas: Wat Chotynieng and Wat Utynieng

May 17, 2014 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Sihanoukville in Cambodia is not as popular as the major tourist destinations in Asia, there is not much to do here. However, the few things that you can do are truly worth the experience, such as a visit to the Wat Chotynieng and Wat Utynieng pagodas. (“Wat” is Khmer for “temple”.) Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s answer to the world-class beach destinations in its neighboring countries. While Thailand has Phuket, Indonesia has Bali, and the Philippines has Boracay, Cambodia has Sihanoukville.

Located along the southern coasts of Cambodia and into the Gulf of Thailand, Sihanoukville is home to about 200,000 people but with only three Buddhist pagodas, one Catholic church and one mosque. Buddhism reached Cambodia as early as the 3rd Century but sadly the historic Wats were built outside Sihanoukville. The majestic and legendary Angkor Wat is located in far-away Siem Reap and the often visited Temple of the Emerald Buddha is found in Phnom Penh, the capital city. The country’s official religion is Theravada Buddhism, which is the oldest surviving kind of Buddhism. Two of the Buddhist temples in Sihanoukville are Wat Chotynieng and Wat Utynieng. …

Victory Beach: “V” for Victory, “B” for Beautiful

May 16, 2014 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

For some reason there are a number of beaches around the world named Victory Beach – but not many cities are called Sihanoukville. Victory Beach in Sihanoukville stands out not only for the city’s name but for the serenity and amusement it offers.

Victory Beach in Sihanoukville – Cambodia

First, let us talk a little about Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s prime beach destination. Also known as the land of beaches, Sihanoukville is the most promising region outside the capital city of Phnom Penh because of the continuous influx of tourists. Although it does not have its own international airport, it is only four hours from the capital city by bus, and a few more hours from Bangkok, Pattaya, and Ho Chi Minh City. It is also a popular destination of international cruise ships coming from and going to Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. The port of Sihanoukville is the only …

Sokha Beach: One of Asia’s Best Kept Secrets

May 15, 2014 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

If you have not heard about Sihanoukville before, then you have not visited some of the most peaceful beaches in Southeast Asia. The name of this peninsula itself sounds exotic and very intriguing – Sihanoukville. The same may be said as well for the name of one of its beaches – Sokha Beach. Where in the world are Sihanoukville and Sokha Beach?

Sokha Beach in Sihanoukville – Cambodia

Sihanoukville is a coastal city in Southeast Asia named after King Sihanoukville in the 1960′s. It is in Cambodia. Sadly, King Sihanouk’s reign was short-lived because Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge army executed him and all his allies and took control of Cambodia. In just four years from 1975 to 1979, Pol Pot washed away all the good things that the Cambodian government was doing for its people and for the reputation of their country. So, today, Cambodia is more easily remembered for the atrocities of the evil Khmer Rouge Army and its stone-hearted despot, Pol Pot, instead of King Sihanouk, scenic Sihanoukville, and the beautiful Sihanoukville beaches, including Sokha Beach. …

Scenic and Beautiful Serendipity Beach

May 14, 2014 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

“Serendipity” is not a common name for a beach, but Serendipity Beach is much easier to pronounce than Ochheuteal Beach. Both are leading beaches in Sihanoukville (another name that is not easy on the tongue) and once you have visited either one, you wouldn’t mind what their names are at all.

This premier Southeast Asian beach town is known for its collection of white-sand beaches, tropical sun, warm surf, salty humid air, and an over-all lazy atmosphere that is perfect for an uneventful vacation in Paradise. Its beaches and natural landmarks are scenic, unspoiled, and secluded. It is also teeming with major restaurants, bars, and local food kiosks that serve simple but extremely delicious sea food Khmer dishes. The New York Times refers to this idyllic beach city as “Asia’s next trendsetting beach” destination. It is also the home of Cambodia’s only international and commercial sea port that is regularly visited by cargo ships, naval ships, and cruise ships from all over the world. …

Weather in Sihanoukville: Predictable and Pleasant

May 13, 2014 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Located in tropical Southeast Asia just 10 to 13 degrees above the equator, Sihanoukville in Cambodia experiences warm temperature throughout the year. Weather in Sihanoukville is pretty steady all year round with average temperatures ranging from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. The city experiences monsoon cycles brought about by the cyclic air pressure changes that are felt all over central Asia. As a result, Sihanoukville, as well as the surrounding areas in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand goes through two seasons – wet and dry. The wet season begins in June all the way to October, which brings cooler and more comfortable days. Unless there’s a coming typhoon, this is a good time for tourism since it is not scorching. Daily temperature could be as low as 20° Celsius midday and below 20° at night.

sihanoukville weather
Pleasant weather in Sihanoukville – Cambodia

Rainy season begins in June and the months from June to August are transition months, which means they are both hot and rainy. The monsoon arrives and rainfall comes in the afternoon until early evening. Although it could rain every day, the daily weather is quite predictable and so it is easy for vacationers to plan their day and avoid the afternoon rains. The rains intensify beginning in September, and calm down a bit in October and November. These months are cool and wet, but very unsettling because of the mosquitoes. These pesky Asian bugs love the damp weather and so tourists should be warned since mosquitoes could cause dengue fever, skin rashes, and other inconveniences, not to mention they are very annoying.

Maintaining Good Health in Sihanoukville

May 12, 2014 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

The city of Sihanoukville in Cambodia is very popular for its beaches, casinos and over-all laid-back vacation atmosphere.

It is a city of peace and tranquility, in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh, the capital city. Since international tourism is steadily rising, local government is working hard to improve situations in health in Sihanoukville, although today, medical services in the city are still very limited and basic. Public hospitals are unreliable and typically avoided by foreigners and expats, except for the prominent Sihanoukville Hospital.

Sihanoukville General Hospital – Cambodia

The most important hospital is the Sihanoukville Hospital, locally known in Khmer as Muntee Pet Jumka Jake. As the largest hospital complex in Southern Cambodia, Sihanoukville Hospital offers a wide range of medical services, which include General Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, X-Rays, Maternity, Ophthalmology and care for HIV/AIDs patients. This is good news for tourists and expats, especially considering the fact that the hospital is located along a major tourist area between downtown Sihanoukville and the famous Ochheuteal Beach. …
