South Asia

The Mystical Subcontinent that is South Asia

South Asia is home to the Himalayas, a mountain range that literally reaches the skies. The Himalayan mountains make up the planet’s tallest peaks, including Mount Everest, and with more than one hundred mountains that are over 7,000 meters high, taller even than the tallest mountains outside South Asia. The Himalayas is rich with legends, mysteries and amazing natural bounty. Where else can you find mountains whose base bathe in tropical climate all year round but whose peaks are capped with snow all year round?

Also, the Himalayas cradles three major rivers, the Ganges, the Indus and Tsangpo-Brahmaputra. The Indus flows through Pakistan, India and Tibet, onto the Arabian Sea. Ganges River, on the other hand, is the most sacred body of water in India. It is, in fact, regarded and worshipped as a Hindu goddess. To the faithful, rivers in South Asia are looked upon as deities or celestial cows that give out life-giving milk. There are about 600 million people living near and along these three rivers and whose lives depend upon them.

Other than the Himalayan peaks and rivers, South Asia is also home to the exotic, mystical and beautiful Indian Peninsula, which includes Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. The fact that India has more than 1.2 billion residents and embraces four major world religions makes this country truly fascinating in so many ways. The ways people dress, dance, sing, create and express themselves are unique to this country alone.

Some of the top attractions in India are the Virupaksha Temple, Kanha National Park, Harmandir Sahib (“Golden Temple”), Jaisalmer, Ajanta Caves and, of course, the iconic Taj Mahal.

In addition to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, other countries that complete the South Asian subcontinent are Bhutan, Iran, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet and the Maldives. They work together through the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

Shankaracharya Temple in Srinagar

November 14, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

On a hill near Srinagar’s Dal Lake is a shrine dedicated to the Lord Shiva: Shankaracharya Temple, one of the oldest temples in the region.  The temple as it is now is said to have been constructed around the year 800 AD, although its origins, strictly speaking, go back further than that.

In fact, various estimates have it that the first temple on this precise location was erected around 2000 BC.

The Shankaracharya Temple as it is now is very likely quite different from what it was back then, of course, and not just because of recent renovations done on it.  For something this literally ancient, dozens of repairs, renovations, and modifications would have …

Roza Bal: The Most Controversial Shrine in the Kashmir

November 13, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

In Khanyar, one finds a place with an intriguing name indeed.  This is Roza Bal, also transliterated as the one-word Rozabal, which stands for “Honoured Tomb”.  People of all faiths come here because of the identity of the sage said to be buried in it: Yuz Asaf, also identified as one of the bodhisattvas of Buddhism and Jesus of Nazareth of the Christian faith.  The name might sound a touch distant at first to English-speaking audiences, but one must recall that Jesus Christ is merely an anglicised form of the man’s original name, which would be nearer “Yeshua”, “Isa”, and “Yuza”.

An Introduction to Srinagar’s Nagin Lake

November 12, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Nagin Lake, while often treated as a separate lake on its own by the inhabitants of Srinagar, is in fact part of the larger Dal Lake of the city, which is so large that it is subdivided into no fewer than four basins (each one called a lake).  Nagin is one of the most picturesque of the basins, with its single-lane (and single-wheel vehicle) causeway and the Zabarwan Mountain looming over it.  It is also right next to the famous Shankaracharya Hill as well as within view of the the local Mughal Fort on Sharika Hill.

Beautiful Nagin Lake

Nagin Lake is considered one of the quieter spots of Dal Lake, perhaps because of its relative isolation from the other lake basins.  There is an air of calm serenity here, and common photos of the lake include ones of the treeline, where water meets the banks lined …

The Raj Mandir Cinema in Jaipur

November 4, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

The Raj Mandir Cinema of Jaipur is undoubtedly an edifice that catches the eye when passed on Bhagwan Das Road.  This enormous structure has been compared to a meringue both from without and within, and it is wonderfully representative of what modern Indian architecture can achieve.  The architect responsible for this unique structure is W. M. Namjoshi.  The man employed the later branch of Art Deco called Streamline Moderne for this piece, and this is certainly reflected in the almost aerodynamic presentation of lines in this edifice’s shape.  It is an unmistakeable building inside and out and one that you are unlikely to forget if you ever see it.

The Nahargarh Fort of Jaipur

November 3, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

The city of Jaipur has a trio of forts that are generally considered to have been the protective bases of the area: the forts of Amber, Jaigarh, and Sudarsangarh.  The last one in the trio was eventually redubbed Nahargarh, the “Dwelling of Tigers”.  Its construction is largely credited to Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II because he was the ruler who spent the most time and effort on developing it in the early 1970’s.
