Oman

Outstanding Oman

The Sultanate of Oman only fairly recently opened up, having been more or less a closed country before all the changes that make it the tourist spot it is now. In a way, this has actually made it an even better tourist destination than if it had become more open earlier: after all, it has served to preserve so much of this gorgeous country’s unbelievable geography and outstanding local character. The Sultanate is a place to visit if you ever come near the Persian Gulf, as much for its modern delights as its natural offerings and fascinating culture.

Omani culture and life is written into the very desert. Not every place you will visit shall have a clear paved road, but many of the paths you will find on a local map are ones that have been trodden into being by hundreds of thousands of camels and people. The most popular wadis (valleys) have obvious paths leading to them, often visible despite the desert sand. And where the spectacular hills and mountains of the country are not describing the horizon, one of the country’s hundreds of ancient forts usually stands vigil against the light sky. It’s a place to go to and discover one’s soul as well as the marvels of the human spirit when set against the beauty of nature. And while some may think of it as a place where one can get lost in the deserts, it’s also actually a place where one can get lost in green mountains and beach sands.

Oman is a world to discover, a landscape broken up into sections of fertile earth, sapphire water, and golden dunes. If you do visit the place, be sure to take in all of its parts—including the whitewashed and glittering cities of the areas man lives in and has claimed his own.

Introducing the Salalah City of Oman

May 8, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

The second-largest of all of the Omani cities is situated along the coast of the country as well, as is the case with the capital.

In Dhofar Governorate, in the most southern and coolest parts of Oman, lies the city of Salalah, a rather lush and palm-filled place. It is the birthplace of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and the traditional city of residence of the Omani rulers. This is one of the most famous tourist spots in the country, and with good reason: boasting a well-developed city centre and a gorgeously verdant landscape rather unlike the rest of the generally arid country. It is reminiscent of East Africa at its best, with leopards and baobabs in the wooded areas near the mountains, and a seemingly near-perpetual spring.

Qurum Beach and Suburb

May 7, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Qurum is a suburb of the capital of Oman, Muscat. It is pretty well know with travellers, primarily because of its main attraction: the beach.

When people talk about beaches in Oman, this is usually the first one they think of and the one they visit first.

Beautiful Qurum Beach

The reason for Qurum Beach being one of the most popular beaches in the country is most likely its location. Being right next to the capital, it is not easily the most accessible of all the Omani beaches: most international flights to the country come in at the capital, after …

An Overview of Khasab

May 6, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Those familiar with the political geography of the Middle East are aware that there is a small piece of land projecting into the waters of the Hormuz Strait that belongs to Oman despite it being divided from the rest of the country by another state. This is the Omani governorate of Musandam, and the capital of this peninsular exclave is Khasab, which is one of the more popular spots to visit in that particular area.

Khasab is a lovely place: its location makes it difficult for it to be otherwise, given that it is situated right on the coast and the gorgeous turquoise waters of the strait. Its location also means that it has long held great importance to not just Omanis but also the other …

Jebel Akhdar: The Verdant Mountains of Al Hajar

May 5, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Oman is typically associated with the desert settings most imagine to go hand in hand with oil fields, and although the country does indeed boast such areas-such as the famed Empty Quarter, which it shares with its neighbours Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and UAE-there are also quite a number of green locations in Oman where the flora thrive. A perfect example would be the mountains called Jebel Akhdar, sometimes transliterated as Jabal Akhdar, which some also refer to locally as The Camel’s Hideout.

Sohar: The Birthplace of Sinbad As It Is Today

May 4, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

In the northern part of the country is the place where most accounts claim the famed Sinbad to have been born: Sohar, another of Oman’s great port cities, and a place where the mystique of the ancient mixes with the modernity of a thriving commercial and industrial fabric.

Part of what has made Sohar such a point of focus for the Omani government of late in its drive to develop more cities and create industrial hubs in the country is its location. Pushed so far up north, it is fairly close to the Omani exclave of Musandam already and …

The Ruins of Qalhat in Oman

May 3, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Qalhat is perhaps one of the more obscure archaeological spots in Oman: tucked all the way to the northeast and bordered by only a small coastal town, it is not a place most tourists think of coming to. Yet it would be a missed opportunity indeed to submit to that popular view. This place hosts, after all, the ruins of the city that was once the most important and prosperous in Oman, ages before the current capital, Muscat, even began to rise to power.
