Macau

Mind-blowing Macau

The subtropical administrative region of Macau was Europe’s first colony in the Orient—it was also its last. This means that Macau has had literal centuries of European—primarily Portuguese—presence in it, lending a western shade to its color. The result is a place with a fascinatingly European continental flavor, even despite the obvious Chinese culture and people inhabiting it.

Walk the streets of Macau and you should see it for yourself: a kind of communion with European taste, European aesthetics and European cuisine. Do not be misled into deeming this land a mere “island of European influence” in the region, however. Macau has a distinct character that combines the very best of east and west in an intriguing, irresistible cocktail of Old World colonial charm, traditional Chinese traditions, and global wealth and opulence. The last should never be forgotten when Macau is mentioned, as this is one of the richest places in Asia—which happens to be largely because it is also one of the most visited.

This little country is a big tourism spot, rich and ripe with heritage monuments as well as theme parks for the eager tourist. But what most people really come to Macau for, probably, is a shot at the tables. Macau is a prime gambling destination for poker-lovers, card-players, slot-enthusiasts, and the like. It is the Las Vegas of the East—although, truth be told, it rakes in more than Vegas does annually. Unparalleled casinos such as the City of Dreams, the Casino Lisboa and the Sands Casino can be found here, and should definitely be visited, whether you are a big-time player or just hoping to bet a few dollars on the slots. Macau will certainly not disappoint those seeking world-class entertainment or gaming opportunities, so don’t think twice about visiting this magnificent place.

Visiting the Taipa Village and the Rua de Cunha

August 19, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

The Taipa Village is where the original community of the Taipa Island in Macau lies. The Village has then been one of Macau’s best attractions being one of the only two traditional villages left in Macau. The village is a small cluster of narrow streets, alleys and lanes, with old colonial houses lined up mostly on each side. The houses often adopt a yellow, blue and green shade of color, which produces a rather enjoyable appearance of the village all together.

St. Lawrence Church: Old but Bold

August 18, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Very eminent because of its imposing twin towers, the St. Lawrence Church is one of Macau’s three oldest churches. This old church is also called as Feng Shun Tang, directly translated to the “Hall of the Soothing Winds”, for the locals. The original structure of St. Lawrence was built during the 1950s and was made entirely out of wood. It was then rebuilt by use of clay during the early 17th Century while its final renovation came during the mid-19th Century where the current stone building still stands.

Greyhound Racing in Macau at the Canidrome

August 21, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Many think that the word greyhound is derived from the English word “grei” that means dog and “Hundr” meaning hunter. Others believe that the ancestors of greyhounds are gazehounds, which are dogs that hunt by use of their sight rather than their smell. Although the truth behind greyhounds remain undefined, greyhounds have been regarded in high esteem for years and were initially bred to be hunting companions and racers. Today, greyhound racing in Macau is extremely popular as locals and tourists alike try to catch a glimpse of these four-legged racing animals.
