Jeju-do

Jeju-do, Korea: Where Time Stands Still

There is always room for modern influences and plenty of destinations welcome modern practices that can be combined with old traditions. There is nothing wrong with mixing the old and new for as long as this effort will not jeopardize or compromise what has been protected for centuries. Introducing Jeju-do, Korea, a virgin paradise, a sanctuary that can be found off of the Southern Coast of Korea, a place where old meets new. Jeju-do, Korea is a great destination to consider for those who want to experience something truly spectacular.

What was once considered as a reclusive hideaway has been transformed into a travelers’ haven thanks to the power of modern media. For those who are not in the know, the island gained popularity when it was used as a production location for a local soap opera. Before then, only a limited few knew about the island, amazing Gimnyeong Beach, and the majestic Jeongbang Pokpo waterfalls.

Although the island is known for its vast greenery, rapeseed fields, and tiki-mimicking grandfather stones, the island is also home to modern cities and commercial hubs. It is surprising to see a massive convention center in the midst of green fields but this is just one of the things that can be expected by those who travel to Jeju-do, Korea.

Apart from the local business folk, there are other local inhabitants that make the destination even more appealing to outsiders. The island is home to its very own version of the ever-popular mermaid. These are the deep-diving women of Jeju-do, Korea. These are senior citizens that have lived off the land for years on end. They are surely sights to see. They can easily dive down the deepest waters without anything but a wetsuit; no oxygen tanks, no goggles, and no fishing equipment either.

Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, One of Jeju-do’s Finest

September 1, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Jeju-do is blessed with so many natural treasures, including three UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites; no wonder it is referred to as “Island of the Gods”. The gods did a good job carving the island’s stunning landforms and spectacular peaks. There are majestic waterfalls, as well, and one of them is Cheonjeyeon Waterfall. The beauty of the cascading waters and the pool below has inspired legends claiming that the gods came down to earth to swim and so they created this heavenly waterfall, and then went back up to the sky. Another legend tells about nymphs and fairies from heaven coming to bathe in the pond every night. The waterfall is known as “The Pond of God”, but the name “Cheonjeyeon” is quite literally translated, “Pond of the Emperor of Heaven”.

Jusangjeolli Cliffs: Truly, Mother Nature’s Gift to Mankind

August 31, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Jeju-do is a beautiful, isolated island located in the Korean Strait south of the Korean Peninsula. It is called “Island of the Gods” for a good reason – the island is teeming with unique natural treasures, such as mystical land formations, enchanting caves and lava tubes, magnificent waterfalls, picturesque mountains, lush greeneries, pristine white beaches and abundant flora and fauna. The island’s beauty secret is that it is a volcanic island. Located at the center of the island is Mount Halla, which used to be an active volcano that spewed lava, uprooted boulders and molded the island’s landscape. One of Mount Halla’s masterpieces that is now a leading attraction in the island are the mighty Jusangjeolli Cliffs.

Stunning Mt. Hallasan National Park

August 29, 2017 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

The beautiful island of Jeju is punctuated by the imposing Mount Halla (or Halla-san) in the center. Halla-san is the most recognized natural treasure in the island so Halla-san has practically become synonymous with Jeju-do; a visit to Jeju-do is never complete without hiking up Halla-san, visiting Mt. Hallasan National Park or at least gazing at its peak. Local islanders often say, “Jeju Island is Halla Mountain, and Halla Mountain is Jeju Island.”

Relaxing and Alluring Jeju-do Beaches

January 10, 2016 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Jeju-do is clearly South Korea’s most beautiful island and refutably one of the best in the world. It has practically everything that vacationers could hope to see and experience in their next island destination. Jeju-do is home to Korea’s highest peak (Mount Halla), most exotic land formations such as the Jusangjeolli Cliffs, majestic waterfalls, the world’s largest known lava column (inside Manjanggul Cave), lush botanic gardens, and a number of pristine beaches. Since Jeju-do is an isolated island, it is bound to be bordered by many beaches. Located in the Korean Strait just below mainland South Korea, Jeju-do beaches are among the best in Asia. The only reason why they are not as popular as they should is that they are overshadowed by the many spectacular attractions in the island.

Jungmun beach – the most popular beach in Jeju-do

Perhaps the most popular beach in Jeju-do is Jungmun Beach (or Jungmun Saekdal Beach), which is famous for its fine white sands. The beach is located within the Jungmun Tourist Complex in Seogwipo, the island’s second major city next to the capital city of Jeju City. Jungmun Beach’s sands have three unique components other than its blinding beauty and perfect texture beneath one’s feet. The white sands are actually a comingling of different sands, …
