Traveling in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is one of the largest countries in the world by area—the ninth-largest, as a matter of fact. It is unrivalled for sheer land size in its region of Central Asia, yet remains one of the less traveled countries in the region, which is a shame. Some say it is the relative dearth of historic sites in the country that is responsible, but that should not lead you into thinking it a featureless spot. The country of the Kazakh is one that can only be truly explored and opened up by the fearless traveler, the tourist not put off by stretch after stretch of either snow or desert and eager to unlock the mysteries bound up in this colossal sweep of seemingly desolate space.

That is the secret to Kazakhstan: the details of its mystique are often obscured by its sheer enormity. Were this a painting, a critic might say of it that the negative space dominates the detail—but that only makes every detail even more worthwhile, more of everything by sheer contrast. Nowhere is the discovery of clusters of petroglyphs more stunning than in the stark emptiness near Almaty. Nowhere are ancient cities more impressive than set against the vastness of the Kazakh Desert. Nowhere are mountains whiter and more strikingly beautiful than when they overlook the beaches of Aktau.

This is the sort of land you visit if you have the true traveler’s spirit within. This is the Land of the Kazakh—for that is what “stan” means: “the land of”—is a land of constantly traveling peoples, of the descendants of nomads who were known for their continuous exploration and adventuring throughout the country. That is what Kazakh means, after all: “a free spirit”, the kind of soul who goes willingly out into unchartered territory without his roots becoming a burden or fear of the vast and unknown shackling his feet.

The Tourism Potential of Atyrau City

September 25, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

The country of Kazakhstan is a newcomer in international tourism. As a former Soviet Union state, its enchanting natural resources, exotic dishes and fun-loving people were hid from the world for so many years. Now, that it is opening up to the free world, it attracts international visitors with its untouched landscape composed of steppes, deserts, savannas, wild forests, clear lakes, mighty waterfalls, colorful glaciers and ancient cities. One of its main cities is the modern city of Atyrau, which is famous for its oil and fish industries. Considered as one of Kazakhstan’s oil capitals, Atyrau is rich in oil, gas and minerals (especially hydrocarbons).

Central Mosque in Almaty: One of the Biggest in Kazakhstan

February 18, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Almaty City is the largest and former capital city of Kazakhstan. It is a Soviet-style city that is known to house the magnificent Central Mosque, established in July 1999. Constructed to accommodate about 7,000 visitors, this relatively very young mosque is one of the biggest in the country. It is truly a majestic structure with marble and glazed tile decorations throughout, following the national colors and motifs of Kazakhstan. The mosque’s most prominent feature is its brilliant blue dome that is 20 meters in diameter and 36 meters in height. Beside the dome is an even taller minaret, measuring at 47 meters high. The Almaty landscape is littered with synagogues, Buddhist temples and other cultural structures.

Duman Aquarium: a Different Kind of Entertainment

February 17, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Duman Aquarium may very well be the only major aquarium facility in the world that is more than 3,000 km away from the ocean. Kazakhstan is a huge Central Asian country, the ninth largest country and the biggest landlocked country in the world. There is no huge body of water in sight, aside from the many icy blue lakes and a portion of the Caspian Sea. Duman Aquarium is the first and only aquarium attraction in Kazakhstan. It is made up of over 2,000 marine life forms representing 100 species and in 3 million liters of water that make use of 120 tons of special sea salt.

Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan: Central Asia’s Grand Canyon

February 14, 2018 By //  by Sarah Cruz Leave a Comment

Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan, Central Asia, is a stunning 154-km long canyon that’s giving Arizona’s Grand Canyon in the United States a run for its money. It is no mystery that Kazakhstan’s own canyon is compared to the very popular American canyon, but Charyn is refutably the second largest canyon in the world, next to China’s spectacular Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon that is 496 kilometers in length. Charyn Canyon is near Kazakhstan’s border with China on the Charyn River about 200 km to the east of Almaty City. It stretches all the way to Torajgir Mountain, which is part of the famous Tien Shen mountain range. Some portions of the canyon are 300 meters deep. Charyn Canyon is a leading tourist destination in Kazakhstan for three clear reasons.
