Shopping in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh is quite an enjoyable experience, not least because the city offers so much in the way of goods for sale. While it is known as the City of Pearls, rest assured that you shall be able to find much more than these jewels of the sea in it, if you know where to look.
Some of the most popular places for shopping in Hyderabad are the bazaars: the city is absolutely stuffed with them, and it should pose no problem at all to simply ask your hotel concierge or whichever local might be available for the nearest bazaar. These bazaars are strewn throughout the city and are known for carrying just about everything possible by way of products, so you are certain to find it highly amusing to visit one. Perhaps the best bazaar to go to, if you really want a huge selection and a true taste of what Hyderabad has to offer, would be the famous Lad Bazaar. It is chock-full of traditional wares by the local craftsmen and manufacturers, from garments all the way down to the exquisite pearls for which Hyderabad is known.
If your tastes run to something more modern, though, you can try visiting the malls. Hyderabad is a major metropolis and thus suffers from no shortage of shopping malls both in the more affordable range to upscale centres sporting the latest brand names from Paris and Milan. Electronics and other sorts of goods are found in them as well, and you have your pick of malls such as the City Centre, the Babukhan, GVK One, and so on.
A particularly interesting place to go for shopping is perhaps Abids. Also known as Abid Road, this shopping road is where you can find some of the best shops in the city. It also holds the first mall to have ever been erected in Hyderabad. This should give the traveller a clue of how long this area has served as a commercial district for the bustling metropolis.
Those who want something a little more original to Hyderabad can probably look for truly distinctive souvenirs in Shilparamam, among other places. Shilparamam is the place to go for local arts and crafts products, and there can be some fantastic buys here, as Hyderabad has long been known for some of the most distinctive and precious crafts in India. For instance, this is one of the centres for the production of Bidriware, the gorgeous pieces of metalware ornaments that have long been associated with prestige and wealth in the country. It is known not only for silver
products in this style but for other ornaments done in exquisite metalwork using other metals, including bronze worked into trinkets or handsome bangles. People shopping in Hyderabad can look for these items in the bazaars, in areas like the Basheerbagh, which is near Abid and which hosts some excellent jewellery shops too, and around Charminar, where the famed pearls of Hyderabad abound in all their lustre.
