The Batam City Square (or BCS for short) is a famous shopping mall located in Batam Island. Batam Island is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Indonesia. It is located in the province of Sumatra, forming part of the numerous islands of Riau.
As a shopping mall, the Batam City Square isn’t any different from other shopping malls in Indonesia. But what sets it apart from the rest is the fact that Batam Island is a free trade zone and thus sells duty and tax free products. So you can expect everything in the mall to have lower price tags than those found in other malls of the country. If you love bargain products, it is a great place to go shopping.
The Batam City Square isn’t the only offering of Batam Island. The island has a number of huge shopping complexes scattered throughout its entirety. What’s great about the BCS is that it is located in the Nagoya City Area of Batam. Nagoya is one of the two distinct shopping and business districts in Batam Island, and it is by far busier than the other shopping district, the Batam Centre Area.
This means that you’ll also be able to visit the many nearby shopping malls, specialty stores and boutiques while you’re in the vicinity. The BCS is just one of the clusters of shopping malls that you’ll find in Nagoya, although it is one of the biggest and one of the most popular, judging by the number of people milling about, both local and foreign, especially during weekends.
And although the BCS is not a new mall, the great variety of merchandise and entertainment attractions it has often lives up to expectations of many tourists. You can find a movie house, salons, spa, a gaming arcade, bowling center, music lounge, gallery, an atrium for occasional events hosting and many others in the mall. There is also a supermarket where you can buy groceries and a few supplies; and restaurants, cafes and a fast food court where you can eat and relax. Most of all, there are numerous shops, boutiques and specialty shops distributed throughout the six floors of the mall selling branded clothing, designer bags, accessories, shoes, jewelry, watches, gadgets, electronic items, furniture, household stuff and many others.
You can find virtually everything you want and need in BCS, even though the mall is not filled to its capacity yet (there are still a few vacant store spaces left at the time of writing). Also, it is easy to get to the mall as it is easy to get a taxi when you’re ready to leave and call it a day. Additionally, the best time to go visit this mall is during weekdays when there are fewer people about.
So, if you’re ever in the country, why not visit Batam Island and experience duty and tax free shopping in Batam City Square and the rest of the shopping stores in Nagoya City Area? The malls probably won’t bowl you over, but the cheap prices sure will.
