Modern Art is a popular cultural museum in Busan, Korea that aims to enhance people’s awareness of the city’s art and culture, offering an active and suitable place for art activities and promoting overall improvement in the arts and culture. The building covers a total land area of 21,560 square meters, with an exhibition space of about 21,425 square meters.
It has three storeys with two levels underground. Besides collecting and displaying the artworks of the local artists in Busan, the museum also concentrates on various works and activities to further achieve its objective. Amongst its activities are scholastic research, archive and preservation, international association with other renowned art galleries, education, cultural events, mobile art gallery and publication.
Inside the museum, there are eight exhibition halls on the first level and 11 halls on the upper floor, covering a total floor area of 4,773. Among those, eight halls are categorized as large halls with a floor area of 374, while another 8 halls are small with only 94 sq.m of floor area. The remaining three rooms can be found outside. One excellent feature of the exhibition halls inside the museum is that the rooms can be adjusted through a flexible space system depending on the spatial requirement of each exhibit.
One of the greatest highlights in the Busan Museum of Modern Art is the splendid exhibition hall on the second floor. Considered the biggest single exhibition hall in Korea, it has a floor space of 1,684 with a height of 4.8 meters. Furthermore, you will be rewarded with a pastoral view of the Bokcheon tomb and Dongnae Mountains if you come to this particular section. With its role in promoting art and culture awareness, the museum provides several educational programs including an art course for adults and children.
For adults, it is a one-year skill course on arts with theory/practical lectures wherein attendees learn the present trends of contemporary art, both local and abroad, fine art techniques and profiles of famous artists. The art course for children is offered during summer vacation for kindergarten and elementary school kids wherein children learn how to build their creativity and imagination by appreciating artworks and drawing pictures.
Other educational activities include seminars to the public and dialogues with popular artists. Besides their educational activities and programs, the museum also organizes cultural events. One is the Mobile Museum, a 10-day event every September to November where artworks are exhibited in many community centers in Busan. Other events include a Practical Arts Skill Competition for Students and the Saturday Live Performance. Some of the best exhibitions displayed at Busan Museum of Modern Art are Fine Art of Busan in Modern Era, The Dawn Age of Busan Fine Art, Shape and Figurative Art of Busan, and Informel and Monochrome Painting. Located in 1413, U 2-dong, Haeundae-gu, Busan , South Korea, it is open from 10am to 8pm and is close every Monday, Lunar New Year’s Day, January 1 and Choosuk. You can also find auxiliary facilities including the art shop, AV Hall, text archive and a restaurant.
