Located in tropical Southeast Asia just 10 to 13 degrees above the equator, Sihanoukville in Cambodia experiences warm temperature throughout the year. Weather in Sihanoukville is pretty steady all year round with average temperatures ranging from 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. The city experiences monsoon cycles brought about by the cyclic air pressure changes that are felt all over central Asia. As a result, Sihanoukville, as well as the surrounding areas in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand goes through two seasons – wet and dry. The wet season begins in June all the way to October, which brings cooler and more comfortable days. Unless there’s a coming typhoon, this is a good time for tourism since it is not scorching. Daily temperature could be as low as 20° Celsius midday and below 20° at night.
Rainy season begins in June and the months from June to August are transition months, which means they are both hot and rainy. The monsoon arrives and rainfall comes in the afternoon until early evening. Although it could rain every day, the daily weather is quite predictable and so it is easy for vacationers to plan their day and avoid the afternoon rains. The rains intensify beginning in September, and calm down a bit in October and November. These months are cool and wet, but very unsettling because of the mosquitoes. These pesky Asian bugs love the damp weather and so tourists should be warned since mosquitoes could cause dengue fever, skin rashes, and other inconveniences, not to mention they are very annoying.
Most tourists avoid the wet months, understandably. Yet, some travelers, mostly photographers and nature-lovers, find the wet season more romantic, dramatic and compelling. This is also the best time to visit nearby Siam Reap to see the magnificent Angkor Wat, as well as the surrounding temples and rice paddies. Boat rides are also easier since the rivers and lakes are high, and hotels are cheaper since it is not the peak season.
Meanwhile, the rest of the year – November through May – is dry and rainless. This is good for tourism since all the flowers are abloom and the fields are all green. Generally, December and January are the best months to visit Sihanoukville and the rest of Cambodia. The country is comfortably warm with clear skies and no rains: the perfect weather condition to hit the beach. It’s cool in the evening, which guarantees a restful sleep even with the A/C turned off. In February, trickles of rain begin and the nights are not as cool.
March, April and May are the hottest and driest months. Midday temperatures in April and May rise from 35° to almost 40°, the sun is scorching, humidity is high and there’s little breeze. This could either be good or bad for tourism depending on how tourists like it. Some westerners from the colder portions of the United States and Europe love to experience the hot tropical sun that never bathes them in their snow-covered cities. Also, these months may be good for tourism because they are guaranteed to be rainless. In all, weather in Sihanoukville is pleasant, giving travelers a reason to come visit anytime of the year.
