Mamanuca Islands is clearly one of the most visited groups of islands in Fiji. If you’ve seen the Tom Hanks movie “Cast Away”, you’ve seen this place. The Hollywood blockbuster was shot completely in the uninhabited island of Monuriki, a part of the Mamanuca Group.
Located not far from the Nadi International Airport, Mamanuca Islands is a volcanic archipelago of about 20 tiny islands that offer all sorts of fun water activities. The most sought after activity of course is scuba diving. The islands offer wide stretches of pristine beaches, exclusive villas, and exotic dive sites. Perhaps the most visited resort is Beachcomber.
Only 17 kilometers from Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu, Beachcomber receives thousands of visitors each year. It is only about 30 minutes from the Nadi International Airport on speedboat. Tourists enjoy lodging at traditional “bures” (bungalows) on the white-sand beach. The island-resort offers a total of 22 bures and 16 thatched twin-lodge rooms. For tourists wanting to save money, a group may lodge at the Grand Bure dormitory that could house 84 guests at one time. It is the largest bure in all of Fiji.
Beachcomber is famous for several activities including scuba diving, jet skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, beach volleyball, snorkeling, or simply bumming under a scenic line of coconut trees. Evenings in Beachcomber are very romantic as guests enjoy a sip of fresh fruit juice or ice cold beer at the resort’s barefoot bar on the pristine beach while watching a cultural show.
Another world-class resort is Malolo, which is known to offer the best massage, spa and wellness experience at its Leilani’s Spa. The spa is gracious enough in providing fun activities for children while babysitting them as their parents get pampered. Its white sands and clear blue waters are as lovely, offering fun activities, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, game fishing, windsurfing, canoeing, and bushwalking. It is also a popular wedding and honeymoon destination. There’s just plenty to do and enjoy in Malolo. The island of Malolo is, in fact, considered the tourism center of the Mamanuca group of islands.
Malolo is only 25 kilometers from the international airport. Thousands of tourists come for its hidden golden beaches, turquoise seas, panoramic views, relaxing facilities, and friendly people. Cruises and speedboats from Nadi in Viti Levu leave Denarau Harbor for Malolo three times a day. There are also fly-on-demand seaplanes going to the resort from the Nadi airport, Nadi Bay and Denarau Island.
The third leading resort is Amanuca Resort on the island of Tokoriki. It is called a boutique resort for its relaxing spa, wedding packages, wedding chapel, garden and forest, hammocks and a kids club. It is one of the most romantic island-resorts in the world, perfect for a memorable picturesque wedding and an unforgettable honeymoon, specifically in Loloma Suite. It is located north of the Mamanuca Group, near the island where “Cast Away” was filmed.
This is not to say that the other Mamanuca Islands are not as compelling as the three abovementioned resorts. There is no such thing as better or best beach in Fiji since each destination has something unforgettable to offer. There are ten luxury resorts, other beach destinations and beautiful uninhabited coral islands in Mamanuca.
