Situated on a ridge at an altitude of 2,073 meters, Kakani is one of the most accessible regions from Kathmandu at this altitude. This settlement is part of the Nuwakot District, which belongs to the Bagmati Zone, and can be accessed through the Trishuli Road. It is approximately an hour away from Kathmandu if traveling by car. One of the thriving local industries is strawberry farming, which was established in the area with the help of the United Nations Development Programme. The people of the place live simple, quiet lives.
The area provides splendid views of the surrounding mountains, particularly the Ganesh Himal and some regions of the Himalayas like the Dhaulagiri, Himalchuli, Manaslu, and Annapurna. Aside from this, the place also offers incredible sceneries of the valleys below. During the late months of winter, the settlement area’s mountain slopes are blanketed with blooming Rhododendrons. People go to this place primarily to enjoy a great time of sightseeing and just take in the tranquility of nature.
Bikers love to go to Kakani, taking the route coming from Balazu. This route affords bikers a chance to encounter other interesting villages along the way as well as stopovers and rest areas in the midst of captivating and scenic surroundings. People also to go the area to take on different hiking trails, the most popular of which is the trail going to Bhanjyang. An average hiker will take 3 hours to complete this trail.
In 1992, a Thai Airlines plane crashed near the area and killed 113 people. To remember those who died during the tragedy, a memorial park was built near the site. Across thie memorial site, you will find a shrine dedicated to the godess Shiva. Another place that you can visit in Kakani is the old villa built about a century ago and used by the British Embassy.
The much awaited Mountaineer Memorial Park is still under construction, and its completion is one of the things that the locals and the tourists are looking forward to. The memorial park is being built primarily to honor the mountaineers who have lost their lives in their attempt to conquer nature. It is common knowledge that Nepal has the highest and most difficult treks in the world that have claimed many lives over the years. The memorial park serves as a place to pay homage to the mountaineers who died while trekking the difficult slopes of the Himalayas.
This project was initiated by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. The memorial park will also have a training center for mountaineers, a business center, a meditation center, and a resort. It is foreseen to become the center of the best accommodations and restaurants in Kakani, and it is expected to bring in both local and foreign tourists when finished. At present, the settlement has a number of decent budget accommodations available to tourists.
