Puerto Galera is one of the nicest places to visit in the Philippines. An idyllic town in Oriental Mindoro, Puerto Galera boasts of its lush mountains, steady streams and rivers, and a beautiful white-sand coastline. One of the problems in tourism, however, is the weather in Puerto Galera. In fact, the Philippine weather is a huge downside to the overall tourism industry of the country. In a year, one or two killer typhoons hit the Philippines, and it definitely puts a crimp in someone’s vacation plans each time.
When coming to Puerto Galera for that beach vacation you’ve always dreamed of, avoid the months of July through October when typhoons and storms hit. Every year, as many as 20 typhoons pour into the country, and the island of Mindoro is very near the usual path of typhoons. The strongest and most devastating typhoons that rocked the country all happened from September to the beginning of November.
It is fortunate that Mindoro is barely under the typhoon belt, which is why the storms have not really damaged the island’s pride, the beautiful Puerto Galera. Worst case scenario is that tourists would be forced to stay inside their hotel rooms and not be able to enjoy diving, water skiing and other fun water sports. July to October is the off season. There is an upside to these months, however. Accommodations, food, and travel costs are cheap, which makes it a perfect time to visit for those who don’t want to spend much for their vacation. A swim in the beach under the rain is not so bad, if you think about it, and might even turn out quite romantic under some circumstances. In fact, during the rainy months, Puerto Galera is still packed with visitors, especially with local tourists. Filipinos from other parts of the country still go to the beaches when it rains, because that is a good chance to get away from the usual hot, sticky days under the sun. Meanwhile, the other months are perfect for tourism.
November to June are very good months to visit Puerto Galera. Come with your bikini and get the best tan you’ve ever had. Keep in mind, though, that the sun is too much during the summer months of March to May, so make sure to put on sun-tan lotion. Students are on vacation in April and May, so expect the beaches to be very crowded this time of year, especially during the Holy Week in April.
The best months are from December to May when it is not very hot or humid. The Philippines does not have winter season, but the months of November to January are relatively cooler. You can feel a slightly fresher sea breeze that blends perfectly with the scorching heat of the sun. It is also less humid. This is the best time of the year to take a leisurely walk by the beach with a special friend or loved one as the sun begins to set.
Spending Christmas and New Year along the shores of Mindoro is quite a blast. Parties fill the beach and fireworks to welcome the New Year are quiet spectacular. Weather in Puerto Galera this time of year is perfect for tourism.
