Mount Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world after Mount Lhotse, with its peak at 8,462 meters above sea level. This peak has a twin called Chomo Lonzo found north of the higher one. The two peaks are separated by a narrow ridge. The mountain is encompassed within the Makalu–Barun National Park and Conservation Area, which was established in 1992. The entire park covers 2,330 square kilometers.
