The Baclayon Church is the oldest Catholic stone-built church in the Philippines that provides a rich early history of the province of Bohol. It was constructed during the Spanish occupation as the very first Spanish Missionaries or Doctrineros settled in the area during the late 15th Century. Today, the original stone church can still be seen at Tagbilaran, Bohol.
Bohol is a haven for old and well-preserved churches in the region but the Church of Bacalayon is the most well-preserved among all of them. The erected building of the church used to be known as the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The area where the church stands was formerly the home of Spanish Jesuit missionaries when they initially arrived in the country. However, many locals believed that the Jesuits were forced to leave the area and move their headquarters to the town of Loboc in order to avoid being mobbed by Moro raiders. [Read more…]
