Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan, is one of the most popular historical destinations in the country. Formerly the capital of Taiwan with a glorious past, there are a lot of reasons why you should see it. If it’s the first time you’ve heard about Tainan, you’re probably asking “where is Tainan City?” Located South-West of Taiwan (22°59’19.74″N and 120°11’3.88″E latitude and longitude), about 27.4 miles from Kaohsiung International Airport, Tainan City is not very far from the major places of interest in the country. So if you’re planning a vacation in Taiwan, consider visiting the Tainan City. Besides, getting to Tainan is easy.
GETTING TO TAINAN BY AIR
Because Taiwan is an island, it is virtually impossible to get to the country from other parts of the world other than by air transport. Land transportation is only possible if you’ve arrived by plane in another part of the country and are coming from there. Nonetheless, there is an international airport (the one of only two international airports in the country) that’s near the Tainan City. It currently serves 13 international airlines flying from Tainan to major cities like Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh, Manila, Jakarta, Hong Kong and many others. And if you’re coming from continents like America, Europe and Australia, domestic flights going to Tainan City is available from Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei. Thus, getting to Tainan can be really simple.
GETTING TO TAINAN BY LAND
It is also relatively easy to get to Tainan by land from other cities of Taiwan. For starters, there are numerous transportation options that you can choose from.
If you’re coming from Keelung, Taipei, Hsinchu and Chiayi, you can easily take the West Line of the railway system of the country. This line runs from Keelung to Tainan, the final station of which is the Kaohsiung. So, if you’re coming from Kaohsiung, you can take the train back and just take the Tainan stop. The travel time from Taipei takes about 5 to 6 hours.
A faster train is also available that shall take you to Tainan in only about two hours. The High Speed Railway System runs from Taipei to Tainan and operates every hour.
You can also take a bus as it is one of the most common ways to travel in between cities. There are numerous bus operators in Taiwan and you can just choose whatever bus company you like that has a route going to Tainan. In Taipei, for example, you can find several buses with routes going to Tainan City. The travel time from Taipei to Tainan in a bus will take about 5 to 6 hours.
And if you like to travel rather privately, you can hire a cab to take you to Tainan. Or get a rental and just drive yourself to your destination.
It would probably be easier to just get a cab than to rent a car. Although driving a car yourself might be even more difficult considering that not everyone speaks English and in case you get lost, you might find it hard to look for someone who speaks English. Otherwise, getting to Tainan could be really easy, wherever part of the country – or the world – you may be.
