The Taichung region’s abundance of rolling hills, open countryside and challenging mountains makes it a great location for bicycle buffs of all forms of fitness levels, from average bikers to extreme and athletic racers. With this, individual cyclists and biking clubs or organizations are commonly seen along roadways, especially on weekends. Fortunately, the city government is becoming more and more bike-friendly, with its great effort to develop a number of biking trails and routes, as well as facilities like bike rentals. Indeed, cycling in Taichung has never been as active and exciting than it is now with these numerous developments.
Because central Taiwan has a long-time reputation for manufacturing bicycles, you can see a very broad array of top quality bicycles and essential biking gear here, all of which are very easy to locate in various small and big shops all over the city.
Currently, the Taichung city government is doing an on-going project to create biking trails and routes across the city for recreational cycling in Taichung. In fact, one of the main routes is situated in the East District, along the DongGuan Road and DongGuangYuan Road. For tourists interested in biking, you may rent bicycles and biking gear at Tai Yuan Railroad Station, situated on the north end of the bike trail, adjacent to the intersection between section 3, Tai Yuan Road and DongGuan Road.
For bikers searching for extreme adventure, you may head to the eastern part of the city toward the towering mountains of Central Mountain Range between Nantou and Taichung Counties. These areas can be accessed through a number of provincial roads and highways, which can offer rides with steep climbs of up to 2,000 meters altitude. Other cyclists also often try riding the north, west and south of the city that features flatter terrain, coastal views and open countryside.
For bikers wanting a more difficult terrain within the city borders, you can take the DaKeng Scenic Area located on the far eastern limit of Taichung City. This popular recreation destination has some rolling hills that are covered by a network of trails and roads well-known to bikers. Another option particularly for BMX bikers is the Taichung Extreme Sports Park that has dirt biking courses, operated by the Taichung Extreme Sports Association.
Besides biking in town, you can go outside the city centre and discover some of the best bikeways in Taichung. Tanyashen Biking Trail is one option, located beside the old Shengang Branch railway and starts from Zhongzheng Road until Central Taiwan Science Park. The Houfeng Biking Trail is a 4.5-kilometer bikeway in Fengyuan District with some of the best scenery such as mountains, water scenery, railway, tunnel and steel bridge. Qingshui Gaomei Bikeway is a 1.7-kilometer coastal bikeway, ideal for biker who wants to observe coastal vistas. You can also enjoy the scenic power-generating wind turbines.
Other great biking trails for cycling in Taichung include the Xinshe Bikeway, Taiping Toubiankeng Bikeway and Dengfeng Biking Trail. On another note, the city also celebrates Taichung Bike Week annually, organized by bike industry volunteers as a way to improve the present industry as a whole.
