This is pleasant climate compared with other leading tourist cities in Asia. Summer in Bangalore is perfect for visiting the city’s many tourist attractions, the most important of which are the Bangalore Palace, Bannerghatta National Park and Bangalore Bull Temple, among many other destinations.
The picturesque Bangalore Palace is one of the many colonial structures in the city that transports sightseers to 19th-century England. Constructed by Rev. Garrett from 1862 to 1944, the palace is a smaller replica of England’s Windsor Castle. It was bought by Chamaraja Wodeyar in 1884 for 300,000 rupees and today it is owned by the royal family, Srikanta Datta Narsimharaja Wadiyar. Rev. Garrett was the first principal of Bangalore’s Central High School (now Central College) and Chamaraja Wodeyar was the king of Mysore or Mahishuru City, the second largest city in Karnataka.
The Bannerghatta National Park, on the other hand, is a later creation established in 1978. It is a 104 sq.km national park that is made up of a dense forest and scrub land where wild animals thrive. The park provides as safe haven for lions, tigers, panthers, bison, leopards, wild boars, elephants and a large number of birds. It also has a crocodile farm, butterfly park, serpentarium and a special sanctuary for rescued wild animals. The park is actually 22 km out of the city, where the weather is even cooler and more pleasant. Average temperature is 15-22° C all year round. The best months to visit the park are September to January.
Meanwhile, Bangalore Bull Temple is a leading destination for tourists and the faithful as well. Located in Basavanagudi, the Bull Temple is one of Bangalore’s oldest temples and is most frequently visited by devotees from all over the country. Legends say that the temple was built to appease a bull that used to destroy the peanuts and groundnuts in the area. After the temple was built, it was said that the bull stopped its rampage.
The second best time to go to Bangalore is during the winter from December to February, with an average temperature of 10-12°C. The coldest month is January, which could be the most attractive and inviting month for Western tourists. These are also the months when there is relatively less dust and humidity. Generally, however, the pleasant weather in Bangalore makes this leading Indian city very inviting to local and foreign tourists anytime of the year. No wonder it has earned the nickname “Pensioner’s Paradise”.
