The Plaza Tunjungan is the lifestyle and shopping destination for the locals of East Java. The plaza is the largest shopping center in East Java with a gross floor area of 228,612 square meters. It is also strategically located in the center of the city’s central business district, making it a prime destination not only for tourists but for locals as well.
The Tunjungan Plaza has a highly diversified tenant base that offers a unique shopping experience in the widest selection of choices. There are more than 550 retail stores, restaurants, bookstores and entertainment facilities in the plaza. Add to that the most famous department stores and supermarkets in Indonesia such as the Sogo Department Store and Supermarket, Matahari Department Store, Rimo Department Store and the Hero Supermarket.
The Tunjungan Plaza is divided into four phases that are all identifiable and interconnected. Its spiral form corridor design adds to its unique appeal. The plaza is also known to have successfully captured the needs of a wide consumer base by providing strategic tenant positioning and different mall access locations.
The plaza was humbly presented in 1986 as the fist air-conditioned shopping center in Surabaya. Tunjungan Plaza I focused on middle-income groups and offered primarily fashion and lifestyle products. It was also the first mall to operate 12 hours in a day and the first one to charge American dollar rentals.
Tunjungan Plaza II was then opened in 1992, specifically targeting young fashion-conscious consumers. Along with the second plaza development, the Mandiri Tower was also erected, which an 11-storey office is building that sits atop of the plaza. Plaza II then went into a refurbishment in 2007, extending its section to cater to the newest fashion trends and the latest technological goods.
Plaza Tubjungan extended their complex even further by developing Tunjungan Plaza III, which is the largest of the retail properties. The third plaza targets upper-middle income consumers with the Hero Supermarket, the Matahari Department Store, its 21 Cineplex, an international food court and two family amusement centers. Its most unique offer is its two 5,450 square meter convention hall and its 733 square meter atrium, which are regular venues for many exhibitions, concerts, seminars and promotional events.
Finally in year 2002, the final installment of Plaza Tunjungan was erected. Tunjungan Plaza IV offers the famous Sogo Department Store and Supermarket making it the first of each in the city of Surabaya. It also offers a wide range of international fashion brands as well as a number of popular tenants such as Celebrity Fitness and Karisma Bookstore.
Plaza Tunjuan attracts about 20 million visitors a year as it is already perceived as an icon of Surabaya. The plaza can be easily reached from any side of the road with plenty of city transports that pass by in front of the shopping center.
