Gyeyang Park is usually the go-to place when residents of Incheon need a break from the busy city. The park is found in Gyeyang-gu, just north of the Incheon city center. Luckily, tourists of the city are able to appreciate the beauty of the natural scenery of Incheon as well.
Gyeyang Park is famous for being home to a mountain of the same name. The Gyeyang Mountain has a height of 395 meters and is part of the Hannam-jeongmaek Mountain Range. This mountain is actually Incheon mainland city’s highest point. The Mani Mountain of the Ganghwa Island exceeds Gyeyang, being 469 meters tall.
Hiking up the mountain is what Gyeyang offers best as trails that lead to its peak offer spectacular views of the Han River, the Yellow Sea and the Gimpo Airport. With hiking being one of Koreans’ favorite pastimes, it’s quite a common scene to see locals going up and down the trails of the mountain on any given day. Surprisingly, this is also the case regardless of the weather condition. Despite the intense heat of the sun or if rain showers cloud the city, several local residents still make their way up the mountain. Many hikers claim that the park on top of the mountain provides them with a sense of relief from the crowded and busy city found below, which is why many locals continue to flock up the mountain top on a daily basis.
Hiking up the mountain is not too difficult with the exception of some rocky portions of the trail. This means that a leisure hiker can easily reach the top without having much difficulty. Hikers can also climb up at their own pace, which makes the trip all the more enjoyable. Hikers are then greeted with beautiful views from every direction, making the hike up the mountain worthwhile. When you reach the top, the Gyeyang Park will greet you with breathtaking views of the city and plenty of resting spots from where to enjoy the view.
Getting down from the mountain proves to be the easier way but arriving at the base will surely leave exhausted hikers thirsty and hungry. Luckily, several food trailers are set up at the base of the mountain with many local delicacies to fill up the hungry tummy. This may be your chance to try Korean products that may be unfamiliar to you. The trick is to watch what most Koreans are buying and eating as you’ll be sure to taste yummy treats upon doing so.
To get to Gyedang Park, simply take the Incheon Subway Line 1 and go down at the Gyeyang Station. You can also get to the same train station using the Airport Express or AREX that connects the Incheon International Airport to the Gimbo Airport. From here, just follow the mass of Koreans that are in hiking attire and you can be sure that they are headed the same way you are.
Hiking is a favorite activity of the Koreans, there is no better way to live a day in Incheon’s hiking culture than hiking up the city’s tallest mountain. The Gyeyang Park is undoubtedly worth every step to the top as the city is blessed with amazing natural scenery.
