Breezy Beach is located in the tranquil neighborhood of Valmiki Nagar (Thiruvanmiyur) in Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu. Although less developed, less popular and less commercialized compared to the nearby Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar, Breezy Beach still attracts tourists and visitors because of its quiet, enjoyable evenings. With a gentle breeze that never fails to make people relax and enjoy the rejuvenating atmosphere, the beach is clean and not as much populated compared to the larger beaches in Chennai.
Because the southern part of India where Chennai is situated is in close proximity to the thermal equator, the weather can be very hot and humid during the summer months of May and June and most of the year as well. The bustling city can be a bit stifling to stay in after a long day at work. Breezy Beach then offers a reprieve from the heat and congestion of the metropolitan city not only to locals but tourists as well.
The area of Thiruvanmiyur where Breezy Beach is located has undergone major development over the years as the presence of the Tidel Information Technology Park added to the neighborhood’s prestige. Professionals working in Information Technology companies that dominated the town’s industry would often go to the beach making it a favorite place to hangout, especially for the young professionals.
Predominantly less polluted and greatly environment friendly, the whole area including Breezy Beach is the perfect getaway for travelers seeking a quiet place to stay in Chennai. However, like most beaches located in the shoreline near the Bay of Bengal, Breezy Beach can be viewed as very beautiful and inviting, but dangerous to swim in. The waters have strong undercurrents that make it hard to swim when going far from the shoreline. Although there are beach police on standby that ride horses to ensure the publics safety, there are no lifeguards and rescue equipment available.
Steeped in traditional Indian culture, travelers need to take note of a few things in order to adapt to traditional Tamil clothing or the proper dress code when in Chennai. Dressing light is advisable because of the weather. Women travelers however would need to be more aware of what to wear in order to avoid any unwanted or even hostile attentions. Travelers, most especially foreigners, would need to dress appropriately in Breezy Beach even though it is a beach. Wearing swimsuits or any revealing clothes or swimwear are frowned upon. For women, the conventional clothing acceptable are saris (sarees) with a choli or a cropped, midriff baring undershirt with short sleeves. Men, on the other hand, are much more westernized in their clothing, but traditional dhoti and lungi are still the recommended men’s clothing when in Chennai or anywhere in India.
Water Land Drive Road can be found just nearby with many restaurants and cafes to enjoy a spectacular view of Breezy Beach while dining. The beach front is recommended for strolling, enjoying the peaceful view, cooling off the heels after a hectic time in the city and just generally have a relaxing time in a place considered as the best – however small it is – beach in Chennai.
