The name Fiji sounds very Oriental and many confuse it with Mount Fuji in Japan and several places in China. Fiji is much closer to the equator than are Japan and China, and is a tropical island-nation in southwestern Pacific Ocean, which means weather in Fiji is basically dry and humid.
Fiji belongs to a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean along with Vanuatu, the Kingdom of Tonga and the Samoan Islands, east of Australia and north of New Zealand. It is a popular tourist destination for vacationing Australians, New Zealanders, and Americans. A few travelers from the United States, in fact, take a prolonged layover in Fiji before continuing on to their final destinations either in Australia or New Zealand.
