Situated in the north of Pichola Lake, Fateh Sagar Lake is the second artificially created lake in Udaipur originally built by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678. The water reservoir was later reconstructed by Maharana Fateh Singh after much devastation caused by heavy rains. In 1995, the water gradually vanished from the lake, but in 2006, the lake eventually regained its water.
Lying just beside the entrance of Moti Magri Hill, the lake extends 2.4 kilometers in length, 1.6 kilometers in width, and 11.5 meters in depth. During monsoon season, this lake covers an area of about one square kilometer. Today, the lake serves as the second principal source of drinking water in Udaipur.
The pear-shaped lake is surrounded by hills, except its eastern part where the stone dam is found. You can tour around the lake while driving through the Moti Magri Road, Rani Road and Fateh Sagar Drive. This winding road provides a magnificent view of the lake as well as the surrounding Aravalli Hill. This lake is a pleasant place to discover the natural serene beauty of the lake.
Construction of Fateh Sagar Lake was well-planned, characterized by an overflow channel and three intake channels that play a huge part during rainy season. These three causeways from the Madar Lake, the Pichola Lake and the Badi Lake lead to the Lake Fateh Sagar. It is embellished by three tiny islands that can be reached through a boat ride in the lake. Lake Fateh Sagar is deemed as one of the most romantic places for lovers because of its relaxing and peaceful atmosphere.
The biggest island is transformed into a park called the Nehru Park, named after the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. The garden is developed into a mini-zoo for kids with a boat-shaped restaurant. Many Udaipur locals love to spend leisure in this island park; tourists love to sip coffee inside the boat-shaped café as they feel the reigning peacefulness of the place.
The second island is also developed into a public park by the Government of Rajasthan, where tourists can see brilliant water-jet fountains within the park. The third island is converted into a solar observatory, the Udaipur Solar Observatory, which is reputed as the best in Asia. An ideal place for the scientific-minded folks, it is a prime site to obtain good solar images due to its secluded location with clear skies and water below it.
Every August/September, the Hariyali Amavasya Mela or the Green New Moon Fair is celebrated at the lake grounds. This is also the best time to visit this place as during monsoon season, the lake overflows which is a very scenic sight. The lake consists of rich flora and fauna such as zooplankton, phytoplanktons, benthos and fishes.
Perhaps the major attraction within Fateh Sagar Lake is the boat ride as the tourists can enjoy the fascinating scenery and greenery of the lake and Aravalli Hill. Motor boats and pedal boats can be rented below the hill of Moti Magri. To visit the park, you have to pay 50 rupees and a minimum of 6 persons are permitted to book a boat.
