Often called Fuxing Park, the famous Jiaoban Mountain Park is situated on the southwest part of Mount Jiaoban. This mountain park is an ideal location for hiking, sightseeing, family picnicking and other recreational activities. The refreshing greenery and landscape, combined with the mild and moderate climate surrounding the mountain is perfect for relaxation and escape from the hustle and bustle on the city centre. Inside the park, several features and recreational facilities are provided for visitors including the Park Villa, the beautiful plum garden, mystery tunnel and international sculpture park.
Standing loftily at 436 meters, Mount Jiaoban is also known as the ‘Lushan of Taiwan’. It is situated southeast of Daxi town and upstream of Dahan River. It is part of the Fuxing Township jurisdiction in Taoyuan County. Jiaobanshan is surrounded by four mountains namely Nanchatanshan, Beichatanshan, Mount Zhentou and Lidong. Home to the Atayal people, the natural scenery surrounding Mount Jiaoban is exceptionally stunning when the Shimen dam is full.
In 2002, the Fuxing township office started a beautification project on Jiaobanshan Park by constructing safe hiking trails, refurbishing the alcoves in the park and planting more cherry trees to give visitors a worthwhile recreation and leisure area. Ancient pine trees, cloud-reaching trees and plums can be seen almost everywhere in the park. Moreover, during springtime, the refreshing fragrance of plums and blossoming flowers scatters all over the park.
One highlight inside Jiaoban Mountain Park is the Park Villa located on Jiao-ban Plateau. It is consists of four buildings with the main building having one living room, one main bedroom and one guest room. The rest of the buildings serve as shelter for staff and guards. On top of the wide-open view, the small, serene walkway is ideal for a peaceful stroll and the reflection along with the seasonal flowers and plants simply make the villa ravishing. Although the area is enclosed by mountains, you can view the entirety of Shimen Reservoir, especially during clear days where the natural landscape of the mountains is reflected in the glass-like waters.
The park is home to the biggest plum flower garden. Despite being beaten up by the currents of monsoon, the flowers still blossom beautifully covering the mountain like snow. The humid air mixes with the low temperature at the early parts of the year and that leads to a misty and cloudy environment. This contributes to the subdued and transcendent beauty of the plum garden.
In 2003, 12 world-class sculptors were invited to create art pieces here for the establishment of the International Sculpture Park in Jiaoban Mountain Park. It is not only a scenic spot inside the park but a mecca of art education and an ideal place of inspiration for aspiring artists. The sculptures include Flying Dragon in the Sky, Love of Fates, Chair on the Roof, Space of Peace, Chinese Shadows, Perspective, etc.
Under the villa is the so-called ‘Mystery Channel’, which has a dimension of 80 meters in length, 3 meters in height and 4 meters in width. The late president Chiang Kai-Shek used this as his personal hideout. With its Atayal-inspired wall painting, this tunnel is a popular tourist attraction.
Access to Jiaoban Mountain Park is easy, either by bus service or by car. If you drive, take the Tai-4 Highway from Taoyuan to Dasi and turn to Tai-7 Highway until Fuxing. Continue driving along the Chungcheng Road to get there. If you take public transport, take the TMTC coach to Baling and get off at Fuxing.
