The Hualien-Taitung Coastline Highway is more famously known as Highway 11 and starts north of Hualien City all the way up to the nearby Taitung City. As the name suggests, the 182.5 kilometer long road was constructed along the coastline making driving along the paved road quite an experience. The highway is part of the Eleventh Provincial Route and was constructed especially close to the coast’s edge, giving unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean.
The coastline highway takes visitors though several rice-paddies, sandy beaches, offshore islands, marine-erosion land formations, humble fishing villages, several aboriginal towns and a ton of viewing platforms along the way. But the highway is not just about a paved coastal road as there are several pit-stops visitors can enjoy along the way. Visitors can choose to visit the Hualien Coastal Park or the Farglory Ocean Park, the Yanliao Hernan Temple, the Salt Cottage, Mount Bull, Nioushan, the Jici Beach and Recreational Area, Shihtiping or the Stone Stair Terrace, Tropic of Cancer and the Fongbin Moon Cave.
Highway 11 can be a great route to take for the ultimate road trip. Aside from the most spectacular views and several tourist attractions along the way, the coastal road has a number of accommodations, restaurants, campsites and shops ready to cater to the road trip needs of the excited traveler. The magnificent coastline will be much appreciated when being driven with your own wheels as you’ll be able to dictate your own pace without having to rush the experience. The truth is, the slower you move and the longer you stay at an area, the more beautiful the scenic area becomes.
Highway 11 can be stunning and charming but it can also be dangerous as well. This coastal highway is infamous for being the favorite spot of big bike racers, impatient local drivers and reckless locals that will pass your car anytime and anywhere regardless of incoming traffic. Although driving yourself along the mountain side road can be an especially unforgettable and pleasant experience, many locals advise otherwise because of the manic driving that constantly occurs along the highway. Taking buses is not a good idea as well as buses often carry locals that are in a hurry to get to one place to another. With a view as good as the coastal line, you would want to take your time and be mesmerized by what it has to offer.
It is then advised to let a cab driver or a rented car with a driver take you along the coastal road instead. With such methods, you can then concentrate on the spectacular views of the ocean, sky and mountains without having to look out for incoming traffic. This then may be the best way to cruise along the prominent highway.
The entire coastal road is scenic at every turn making more and more tourists wanting to linger on it a little bit longer. With the picturesque sky meeting together with the horizon, Highway 11 is indeed a road worth traveling through.
