Nepal is a developing Asian country that is marred by political and social unrest and instability involving China and its own government. The local government of Kathmandu, however, strives to keep its tourism industry afloat since this is an important contributor to the economy of the capital city and the country as a whole. With the help of the local police and health centers, Kathmandu guarantees safety and good health to its visitors, which regularly arrive in hordes. City hospitals and medical centers are doing a good job in maintaining health in Kathmandu.
The most important hospital is Bir Hospital, which was established in 1889 by Bir Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, then Prime Minister of Nepal. It is a modern hospital that offers high quality medical and surgical treatments. It is well equipped in handling cases in general surgery, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, and pathology, among other services. With an expert medical staff, medical students from China and Russia regularly come here for internship. Since this is a government-run hospital, budget is always a problem. Due to several and recent cases of death, foreign tourists do not recommend Bir Hospital.
Foreigners, tourists and expats prefer the CIWEC Clinic, located just across the British Embassy near the tourist district of Thamel. Most of the doctors and staffers are foreigners, and a doctor is available 24/7. An American dentist is also available at CIWEC Dental Clinic. Not far is the Nepal International Clinic. This is also popular among foreign tourists and slightly cheaper than CIWEC Clinic. They also accepts credit cards.
Another important hospital that caters specifically to the medical and health needs of foreigners is Patan Hospital, located in Patan, sister-city of Kathmandu. Patan Hospital could very well be the best hospital in Kathmandu Valley. Some of its staffers are Western missionaries.
Some other hospitals in the capital city are a private hospital that is popularly known for cardiology called NORVIC Hospital, B & B Hospital, Om Hospital, and the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. The Tribhuwan University Institute of Medicine is the country’s first medical college. Today, there are a number of medical schools in and around Kathmandu, which include Kathmandu Medical College, Nepal Medical College, National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), KIST Medical College, Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Patan Institute of Health Sciences (PIHS), and Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS). There are also specialist hospitals in the city, such as Kathmandu Veterinary Hospital, Kanti Children’s Hospital, Nepal Eye Hospital, Hospital and Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children (HRDC) and Gangalal Cardiology Hospital, among others.
Health in Kathmandu, as well as the available health services, are the best in the country. All major urban developments in the country are concentrated inside and around Kathmandu. Other than health, however, safety of tourists is also a concern here. International tourists are advised to always keep their passport, visa and proper documents in a safe place, coordinate with their country’s embassies, visit popular and well populated tourist spots only, not engage in shady deals involving the sale and purchase of antiques, and always inform the police of any trouble.
