Geothermal Valley is found in Beitou and is one of the major attractions among the hot springs found in the area. It is known by two other nicknames. The first is Hell Valley, a name it earned because it is often shrouded by thick smoke that emanates from the hot waters. Its second nickname is Jade Spring Valley. Because it is a green sulfur spring, its waters have a greenish hue resembling that of a jade. This can be observed on rare occasions when the steam rising above the spring is not too thick and the water is visible.
The hot spring is indeed a sight to behold as the thick smoke rises in the midst of rich green vegetation. Many tourists visit Beitou just to see the Geothermal Valley and to be enveloped in its unique ambiance. The place is also quiet, which makes it perfect for relaxation.
Many years ago, people were allowed to boil eggs in the waters of the hot spring. However, to avoid incidences of accidents, this practice is now prohibited. The government has erected a fence around the hot spring to prevent people from coming too near. With the hot spring’s temperature reaching up to 100 degrees Celsius, one can only imagine what would happen if people fell in or accidentally dipped their hand or foot in the boiling water. The fence around the hot spring also serves to protect the area from litter and preserve the beauty of the hot spring.
Geothermal Valley feeds the waters used in the hot spring resorts and spas that abound the area. One of these is the Millennium Hot Springs, which is found beside the Hot Spring Museum. The Millennium Hot Springs is perfect if you want to experience bathing in the hot water but do not plan on staying the night in Beitou. The entrance fee is very cheap – just NT$40 plus additional NT$20 if you want to rent a locker. Proper swimming attire is required in the communal pools.
Another affordable hot springs resort near Geothermal Valley is Asia Pacific Resort. It has both public and private pools, and some pools are indoors. This resort has a shuttle bus that travels to and from Xinbeitou MRT Station. It is a lot more expensive than the Millennium Hot Springs.
If you plan to spend the night or stay longer in Beitou, there some really good resorts you can choose from. One of these is Spring City Resort. Aside from its hot spring pools and relaxing spas, the resort commands a wonderful view because it is found farther uphill compared to other resorts. Hot spring water is available in the bathrooms. Spring City Resort also has an exclusive hot spring area called Cypress Wood. This area is for club members’ use only, but sometimes they offer it to other guests for an additional fee. Accommodations in this resort include buffet breakfast.
Geothermal Valley is very accessible by public transportation. You may take the MRT to Xinbeitou Station and take a short 10-minute walk from there. You may also take buses 216 to 218, 266, and 223 and alight at Xinbeitou Station of the MRT.
