The city of Udaipur is often associated with palaces and lakes. But one aspect of the city which is most distinguished is its gardens. One of the oldest gardens in the city is Gulab Bagh (Rose Garden), and is also the most famous one from ages.
Located on the eastern side of Lake Pichola at Lake Palace Road, the Gulab Bagh is a marvelous rose garden built by Maharana Saijan Singh during 1850s. It is considered as the biggest garden of Rajasthan, covering more than 100 acres of land. Also known as Saijan Niwas Garden, it is celebrated for its wide varieties of roses which are not common in many gardens in India, making it unique from other.
The main highlight of this rose garden is the well-organized rose beds, a virtual jungle of flowers, on the border of the city area. In the past, the courts were held here and it was also the location of different state offices. It is believed that the founder of Arya Samaj, Swani Dayananda Saraswati composed his renowned book ‘Satysrtha Prakash’ here. This garden is not only filled with flowers – a large pond filled with lilies and a number of trees that provide shade to tourists are also found here.
The Saijan Niwas Garden has everything to make every kid happy. There is a little zoo with various animals, like leopards, chinkara, tigers, and birds. A toy train also runs, covering the entire garden on wheels. Taking a fun ride on this train is a pleasure for all ages.
Attached to the rose garden is a public library, which is known as the Saraswati Bhawan Library. The building was originally called as the Victoria Hall, a beautiful white building built to remember Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. You can find many rare books and manuscripts in this library that offer a notable read on history, archaeology and Indology. Gulab Bagh used to have a museum known as the Victoria Hall Museum, famous for its rich collection of royal household items, antiques and other relics from the past. However, it is recently shifted to Karan Vilas Mahal that is located in the City Palace complex.
During the months of July/August, a traditional social fair known as Sukhia Somwar or Shravan Somwar takes place in Gulab Bagh. During this fair, a large number of people gather here. Women, clad on their traditional Rajasthani attires, consider this day of religious importance. To reach Saijan Niwas Garden, you can take a local bus, tonga, taxi or auto-rickshaw. The garden is near the banks of Lake Pichola, southeast of City Palace complex.
